I usually try to watch each opening and ending at least once. If I like it I would alway watch/listen to it. If a series changes the OP and ED then I watch it when it changes. I really liked the second opening to the first season of Darker than Black and I would always watch it.

First off, this is a really good TOPIC.

I love OPs and EDs. One reason why is that they get me hyped for the episode. Another reason is that I use them to 'stay current.' I try to watch as many new OPs and EDs from anime that come out each season, even if I have absolutely no plans to watch the show.

Now, as to which ones I like more,... hmmm...

Papakiki: ED better.; Joshiraku: ED; Bleach: cumulatively, both.; Hikaru no Go: cumulatively, OP
Kuroko no Basuke: both (cumul.); Working! (or Wagnaria; both seasons): OP; Senkyo to Chocolate: OP; Guilty Crown: both (cumul.).

From those eight, overall, I don't prefer one over the other because an OP can be better than the accompanying ED, and vice versa.

Most of the shows I listed I haven't even seen. One I didn't list is Hiiro no Kakera. The OP for season 2 is mind-blowning IMO, though I'm never going to watch the show. Then, there's Naruto Shipuudden, whose OP (at the moment), seems kind of 'suckish.'

All and all, it depends. I want them to stay. 3 minutes of visuals and music isn't a lot to ask for.

Just my thoughts.

Yeah, I think openings are an essential part of the anime, because with a good opening and ending, the anime seems better in general. But I prefer openings like many other people, just because it seems to be more focused on the story and stuff whereas the ending is mostly there to provide closure to the episode and most of it is compromised of rolling text

Personally i prefer openings, they usually foreshadow stuff that happens and gets me hyped to watch the show.

Depends on each song and it's relation to the anime

99% of the time, I skip them both. I can't stand em.

Both the OP and ED are important. They must convey a mood at the start and end of a show. If I find either or is unsatisfying then I will skip them.

I'll use BTOOOM as an example for OP and ED.

The OP http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vH2Ar5RcenA gets you pretty pumped up for what is to come and after seeing the progression of the characters through good or bad times the ED http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RgEUldlauEQ does a good job at covering both outcomes for however the episode ends.

Now, I do find I enjoy more OP than ED since the ED seems not to really grab as much as OP do. Usually the case is I just don't enjoy the song more than the mood it's conveying to me.

Mushi-Uta's http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WBHpBuhzLtI ED was a pretty good mood setter.

Another reason I find OP and ED important is the feeling of completion. Moreso the ED since it's the last thing you hear and can really drive the episode home, and dictate where to go from there.

And maybe I'm weird.

At least the rule of thumb for me is, give op ed a try on the first ep, see if I like it.

So far, been a while now, Muv Luv op is the only I listen too so...

It doesn't make a difference to me, actually I stand correct it does make a different it cuts 3 minutes off each anime so I tend to stay away from this.

I should mention back in day when I was fan-subbing I had to listen to the openings and endings a lot, and I wasn't too fond of that (those of you that have used Aegisub should know).

ps. I don't fansub now, don't have time for this volunteer work lol

EDIT: If anyone has seen the Aria series, you know you're forced to watch the entire opening. The opening song is incorporated into each episode as in each opening is different as it is part of the episode. In Which I REALLY enjoyed.

There have been animes in the past that put the opening 10 minutes into the episode, ef (melodies) was one and I watched that as it felt part of the episode. The role can be placed to the ending theme when it starts singing near the end of the episode and move towards the credits. I personally like this sequence of events it shows a positive reaction to the audience.

I for one love having insert songs being played in an anime which is the main reason why I loved Macross Frontier so much, it shows more "work" and attention to detail in an anime which tends to make it more enjoyable.

Something similar to the Aria series, but with the endings, is in Heaven's Lost Property. Each ending matches the episode and every ending features a new song. The opening is unchanged throughout the whole first season. The second season has a joke version of the opening from the first season featuring Tomoki instead of Ikaros for the first episode but has a new opening (again, unchanging) for the rest of the season. Little things like that.

I never skipped the openings and endings for Code Geass and Elfen Lied. I enjoyed seeing them...even 13 times in a row.
