Avatars are 200 x 200 pixels.
If your image is not that size then you're given a tool to select what portion you want to use.

There was a soft limit of 200 x 500 that users were abusing.

So we've decided on a 200 x 200 image for consistency across the board.

i agree, long avatars were better.

First the watcher system is going/broken & now the avatars have been screwed up. This place is less appealing every day.

You can thank all of the members who were abusing the avatar soft limit by uploading super long avatars that would make users, especially on low resolution screens like my laptop, scroll through unnecessary long empty pages just to read one sentence.CR had been lenient for a long time with the avatar size, but eventually too many users were abusing the system and not following the rules, so CR was forced to impose a hard limit.

As for the "watcher system", are you referring to the queue?

no, the good old fashioned watch list system which CR is slowly teasing out of the website features now.

Ok so people were abusing the avatars before, but many werent. They didnt need to go so extreme as they have. I use a laptop aswell but have no issues.

The watch list has been phased out for a good while now, and I agree that the new queue does not have the same amount of features that the watch list did.

However, CR has read the suggestions from users and have said that they are currently working on improvements to the queue to add for features that people are asking for.

As for the avatar change being too harsh, it follows similar guidelines used by a lot of other forum websites and it only applies to the avatar on the forums. The pictures you upload to your profile can still be any size you want. There were enough people abusing the system to make a change necessary, because if there weren't, then CR would have continued what they had been doing for a while now. (Ignoring just the few who broke the rule). The only way to stop those people from abusing the limit, since they apparently do not care to follow a simple rule, and to stop the increasing number of people who were not following the soft limit, is to force a limit for everyone.

CR had let the long avatars slide for a long time, but eventually the problem got large enough that it was disrupting the flow of the website.

Two questions, out of curiosity...

1. If 200 x 500 was the soft limit before, why was that not made the hard limit instead of 200 x 200? That probably would have bothered people less. Did Death the Kid take over CR with his symmetrical obsessions?

2. Any reason why the 200 x 200 limit was implemented for both free and paying members? Having a larger avii size limit seems like another potential carrot to dangle in front of people to drive them toward the premium memberships.

Ultimately, I'll work with whatever CR offers... I just feel sad that the work many friends put into some great (and not outlandish) avii for me will now forever reside only in my Photos page.

Think of it as an artistic challenge. Your current avatar is only 100x100 and shows good detail. CR said they chose 200x200 because it fits the new site design and layout the best.

A lot can be done with 40,000 (200x200) pixels.

As I said, that's what I would be doing... but that does answer the question. I know the ridiculous abuse of the avii size being made by a lot of users here, and it's a shame that a few people ruined a unique aspect of CR as a social networking site. But I also figured that the final decision on the hard avii size limit must be more to fit some sort of general site format "look".

I'll take whatever I can get... just because I have less than an acre in my yard now and not the 10 acres I might have had before, I can still plant some colorful flowers or grow some tasty vegetables... ^_^

Peppers are great for small gardens. I have two Serrano plants, and only one is enough for what I need as Serrano peppers pack a punch. I've been thinking about trying ghost chili next year.

CR avatar makers just need to add some "Serrano peppers" or "Ghost Chili peppers" to their avatars.

Not really sure what you are trying to ask, or where your confusion stems from. The smaller avatar size is final and not up for discussion. It was never a matter of possibility to begin with, but one of preference.
