I don't cosplay much, because I never have the time or money, but I'd like to! My Mom's friends with this girl named "Ivy Doomkitty." She has a facebook page. And she always tells me how this woman loves to show her creative side with cosplay. It's something I'd love to do!
But it's pretty frowned upon where I live. If you cosplay, you're automatically a socially awkward geek, with no life.

Pfft, people that I know that cosplay, they put their heart in their costumes. They make every detail. No life my garters.

When I was younger I was desperate to cosplay (I was 12, I wanted to be a sailor scout :P). I finally attempted it in my early-mid twenties, after teaching myself to sew with a machine. It was an ok result for a first attempt but nowhere near the results of people who have done it for years, and even with the fact that I didn't do a wig or special shoes it was still very expensive for me. I felt a bit laughed at for my attempt, and some people put me down for not having a wig and special shoes. Plus I always worry things I make (crafts in general) will come to harm, and if I'm wearing them they're more likely to be damaged. I decided cosplay wasn't for me, as I really don't have the time or money (or the thick skin). So I won't be trying again, but I do understand the desire. I like slightly less demanding dress-up occasions where there's no frowning upon you if you didn't make it yourself and no need to be super amazing, not enough of those now that I'm an adult. I dress up on halloween even if I'm not doing anything just cause I miss that aspect of it.

Because they might assume it is for Halloween and judge according to that.

My family doesn't understand why people cosplay either, especially when it's not Halloween time. I don't cosplay, but I love seeing other people cosplay for fun.

GaiaOnline is full of morons. :L But cosplaying is indeed not for everyone. But then there are those people who say you shouldn't cosplay a particular character if you look nothing like them, or if you're fat, you shouldn't cosplay.

Though I would never do it myself, people put a lot of time, money, and energy into it, and I think they look great. They are doing something they love and enjoy, and that is awesome.

We all have things that we do and don't understand. It all depends on what perspective you're coming from. Like I may not ever understand why people buy medication for "restless leg syndrome".

I never cosplayed in my entire 19 years of living. Oh yeah! I had! When we had therapies for our patients. I was RED RIDING HOOD.
However, I never thought of cosplaying when I went to anime conventions. I would rather watch the cosplayers than being looked at. It's more entertaining that way.

Whether it's 'pointless' in the long run or not, many cosplays have a lot of work that go into them, I think that makes them worth it that a person would put so much into a costume

I've never cosplayed before, but I would love to try it someday though, it seems like so much fun. I just have to get up the courage to do it I suppose.

Well I'm going to be blunt. I think it's childish. And most of the people I've met that participates at such cosplaying events have been very "off" personality wise. Hard to put your finger on it... But very vain and pompous.

Before anyone goes aggro, this is all from personal experience that I've had with people.

They probably are too wrapped up in their own ideas about what's juvenile and what's not to see that it's just a normal hobby.

Personally, myself and all my friends have wanted to cosplay desperately for the longest time. I finally got to last May and it was so freaking FUN 8D There's something really cool about just being able to assume the identity of a character, I guess.
