After the cluster he managed with the last three--or should I say the alleged first three--movies, he needed to retire. retire..... being a creative consultant doesn't sound like retiring to me Good point! He has had a pretty large animal on his hands for the last what 2+ decades and I'm sure he wants to get out from under it. But with they way Disney operates it's cash cow, I doubt he'll like the penny-pinching atmosphere there. It will be interesting to see how he negotiates his metamorphosis. The way things are as of right now..... I'm not sure either how he'll adjust to Disney's ways. and yes! there will be a lot of penny pinching going on. Let's hope Kathleen Kennedy.... now the new President of lucasfilm... handles these tedious upcoming situations that will happen in the future. we both know that how much pressure is put on her for now she has to live up to Disney standards and meet Georges standards as well..... me and a friend was talking about this last night... and since my friend is around Goerge's age he told me that being a creative consultant is a nice position to have and say "hey I sold my company, in return you let me do what I want still yet". gives a great positon to still be in charge where it is needed......lol... I think it will be fine.. yes there will be a lot of changes but it should be fine. Pixar was ok with the adjustments when they became apart of Disney... I think lucasfilms will be alright considering. What will be interesting is the fact that he has probably spent more time administrating the company for the last ten years essentially playing GOD, have you ever noticed how many films LucasArts does the sound for, a lot of them (I have a bizarre obsession for reading movie credits). I know Lucas probably has squadrons of subordinates whom he delegates everything to but when you've created a company as successful as LA you don't take your eye off of anything. So now not only is he going to be under a microscope to create but to create with someone else dictating budgets. He might become quite frustrated. And not to disparage Disney repeatedly, but they really haven't retained the quality that they had during Eisner and his predecessors, oops forgot Katzenberg also. I loved Pixars early films but I just haven't found the sophistication of Disney's earlier works in anything they've put out in probably over a decade But it might just be I'm getting old lol. And look at what has happened to Studio Ghibli, they haven't done a decent film since Disney bought them. Mind you Miyazaki was irreplaceable, but why didn't he take up a similar position as George touts doing. And I cannot help but think that Ms. Kennedy will burn out quickly as well again for the same reason as for George. If you look back at Katzenberg's short fore with Disney, you'll see a group of very motivated people who sorry for a lack of a better word are perfectionists (Spielberg, Katzenberg, Kennedy, and Lucas, etc) they don't like to attach their names to substandard work. Mind you I am overlooking a few big mistakes made within that group but overall I think they demand high standards for themselves and their works. Too bad the rest of our society doesn't. As I said it should be interesting to observe what will happen...only as an outsider. In the end what it comes down to is the almighty dollar. Again to date myself, but years ago companies cared about how they took care of not only their customers but their staff. Companies understood the value of quality, even if at times it meant forgoing immediate returns because you would earn a lifetime or multi-generational customer by doing something properly. There really isn't any forethought of the future, immediate returns are all that matter. With Disney this shows in their movies, the attitudes of their parks, hotels and products. Again a cash cow. Sorry, exhausted so I'm pontificating. I believe we should just wait and see... and I do agree with you. its all about the money mostly inspite of everyone doing their job....lets just sit back and see what happens eh. I agree, I'm just looking at it as future amusement, but would love to be a fly on the wall for those meetings. Agreed I'm with you on this |

I heard of this. If ANY of Disney's planted child actors makes an appearance. Such as Miley Cyrus or whoever they have now, I can almost promise you guys that another theatre shooting will happen.

Haven't seen Avengers yet, any good? I'm not shooting down Disney completely, I know they have turned out several films through there subsidiaries that have done well and have even been entertaining. On the whole though quality has dissipated, causing the corporation to pick up a dubious air. There was a time when you went to a Disney movie just because it was Disney, you knew you were going to enjoy yourself. That isn't the case any longer. So far as Ghibli goes I was referring to Disney Films vs. Channel different subspecies. Though I'll be honest I didn't see Arietty but was soooo disappointed in Ponyo I'm not sure how Ghibli could win me back, it's not like they care though is it? The best and brightest thing Lucas could have done is to have written very exact terms, regarding the next trilogy into the contract of sale, who knows what they did. As we've all said we'll see. |

Still haven't bothered w/ the 4th. The first film was great but after that they progressively went down hill. But to be a little more gracious, you are correct Disney did turn the Pirate movies into an incredibly successful franchise, heck still had Captain Jack trick or treaters two weeks ago! |

Spoiler Alert! Click to show or hide I am so glad Arietty turned out well I suppose I'll give it a view during the upcoming holidays. I had grown up seeing countless versions of "The Littles" and "The Borrowers" and was never terribly fond of the story but you were obviously very moved by Ghibli's rendition so you inspired me to see it. I enjoy anything that offers a catharsis. I've been up in the air about Avengers as well, I loved the 1st Ironman could have passed on the 2nd, and hear that the 3rd should be great (very dark). But was disappointed in Green Lantern and Capt. America both stories seemed to lack life to the stories and Thor, well I've just never liked the superhero and I can't figure out why. I love Scandinavia and have several Scandinavian friends. I'm at a loss. I enjoyed the early Spiderman trilogy for some reason I didn't judge them as harshly as I usually critic movies. Just picked up the new DVD so now you have me excited to view it. Holidays are the one time of the year that I hibernate and view most of the past years new movies. ROKU now has several sites where you can view new releases for half the price of cable pay per view channels so maybe I'll try Avengers in the near future if you would like I'll send you a quick response to it. With Lucas I just cannot see someone having had so much control over such a giant within its industry having decisions dictated to him, It just doesn't bode well. Imagine yourself taking ten even five years to carefully build a business, sweating over how your going to pay bills, staff on a weekly basis and over those years making it to the top of the mountain. You make the decisions as to whether your going to throw $100,000 or even $1,000 in to a project to keep it up to you standards and keep your company on top. Then imagine giving up control of running your company but retaining creative control and when you need that additional $1,000+ and your told it isn't available to you. It's a hard pill to swallow. I have not had the exact predicament by similar problems with partners. Not fun. |

Star Wars NEEDS to be a continued series. It NEEDS to be revised, continued and further explored. It's too great a series to be dropped and I have confidence in Disney. May they make Star Wars a direct (or better) rival of Battle Star Galactic, Star Trek, and anything else of the Sci fi genre. I just hope they don't add too much weird stuff that makes no sense down the line. For example, there ARE alien races in this series, I know, but they shouldn't be too far out of the ordinary and plain, "What the hell is this?". I just hope it becomes a great success.

Some new potential headlines:
The "Big D" sues the world's zoos claiming copyright infringement as kangaroos look like Taun tauns. Orders zoos to replace them with animatronics. Company buys Telletubbies and replaces them with Ewoks. "Dee films" says it will be an improvement. Princess Leia character gets a makeover. Execs determine costume to be too skimpy, the little mermaid jealous. Student who jumps fence on grad night at theme park gets flattened by landspeeder at "tatootopia" ride. The park's private ambulance puts a band aid on and waits 20min. before transporting him to hospital so as not to interupt the Darth Vader villains parade. Pookas film inserts porn scene into window of Sky City. PR dept says it's a justifiable prank but, will in consideration of families release the film under it's grown-up film company: touchy-feely-stone pictures. The Darn Incredible Sells Notably Everything Ya company buys Walmart. Announces it will be the new "Star Wars Super Store". Prices to triple. But yes, you can depend on Disney to make sparkling, pretty movies that contain every desired element in a neat and tidy package. I tip my hat to their artists. |
