Here I am 63 years of age and I am a self confessed Otaku. I have been a gamer since Pong and into Anime since Rama 1/2 came out. Been reading Japanese Manga since the mid 70's . My very first computer was a Commodore Vic 20 and I built my first PC in 88.

My kids think I am nuts and my Grand Kids think I am the greatest. Before you think I am a recluse I was a Staff Seargent in the Army and I am also into collecting and shooting old military firearms. I reload my own ammo and try to make it to the range at least twice a week. I all so enjoy fishing and boating. But as I get older I am enjoying my anime and manga more. That has my family worried. Do any of you think I should "Act My Age?". I for one do not want to become just another OLD FART waiting to die.

To grow old is mandatory! To grow up is optional.

There is a man from Australia (his name I don't recall) who is in his 70's and is an anime fan. So, I feel that there is no exact proper age to be an anime fan. If it makes you happy, then enjoy it to your heart's content.

Why are you even asking those questions when you know it's right?

well if u post something like this on CR, ur likely to get a biased answer from the viewers of the post of "yes u should continue because anime is cool." honestly though, its something ur passionate about. if u love it THAT much, stick with it. ur family probably isnt too fond of anime im guessing. i typically dont talk to ppl about anime if they dont like it, including my family. but ill talk about it all day with ppl that do like it. i will say this: most anime is taken place with teenage characters in middle or high school. especially if ur watching ecchi, the problem they might see with it is that u might look like ur a pervert who likes young girls. i mean no offense. just tryin to answer ur question and i get passionate sometimes ^.^ hope it all works out for ya.

Perhaps he needs a dose of reassurance, so I think we can give that to him.

I want to be into anime when I am 100. If I make it that far. So if that answers your question. No, Anime has no age requirement and there is good Anime for all age groups.

There is no way I am going to give up my Otaku hobbies. I do not push any of my hobbies on anyone. If they do not like them then just stay away from me while I am enjoying myself. My time and my money, I will spend both the way I want.

Thanks for the replies so far. If I am pushed they will be my backup.

Ahhh I so look up to you ;___;
I'd love to like anime into my 100s as well.

You're definitely not too old. I mean, sure you might get some funny looks from people if you go out to anime conventions or whatever, but I still think at age 63, anime and video games are still worth enjoying.

not at all although i don't think being an "otaku" is necessarily a good thing! moderation is the key in any indulgence. Now ur avi is a bit scary but that's another story

Oh, my!!!!!
Too old? -perish the thought!!
You have officially become an inspiration to me- a soon to be 55 yr old.
Lately, my life has been consumed by manga & fantasy fiction, so I've let anime on CR slide & my DS lite has been collecting dust, nor have I upgraded my handheld, as my daughter informs me she is now on the 5th subgeneration 3DS XL! But, we do still have our original Atari system!
One is never too old to act young. All it requires is the desire to continue following dreams & having limitless imagination.

There really is no age limit to loving anime, or really having any hobby out there. While it might be true that tastes change as time rolls on, the simple fact that you can still love something as passionately now as when you first picked it up however long ago is a testament to your personal devotion to the things you love in life. The fact that your children don't understand is, frankly, irrelevant. Just as I told my father not too long ago, he has no more right to tell me what to do than I have to tell him what he ought to do. Your life is your own and you do with it as you see fit. If that means you love anime and guns, then grab that M-16 and watch you some damn anime and be proud of it!

As a former soldier myself, I can say without hesitation that there is nothing wrong with being an otaku. You did your time, sacrificed more than some people will ever know, and when you get up there in age if you find something you like, you gotta stick to it because you owe it to yourself to do something selfish! I salute you, Staff Sergeant, and press on loving what you love!

It's great that you enjoy doing things that other 60's people can't enjoy.

I hope I can be 60 and still able to enjoy video games and animes.

But I am uncertain, I am pretty sure my tastes will change when I turn 30, 40, 50 etc.

Before I was really into cartoons like CatDog, Recess, Peppermint. Now I can't stand those cartoons.

I'm also growing bored of video games, because they're so repetitive... whereas when I was 15, I could play a video game 24/7.
