What ever you find enjoyable. Being a musician and the way which we play is not a competition amongst each other. There's no need to worry about that stuff. Pick up what ever piece of wood or metal, whether it be notes hit through wind instruments or string instruments. The point is if you enjoy it, don't stop playing and don't stop learning, Savvy.

I'm horrible at identifying notes by ear. I'm so much better at reading, as is probably the case with most everyone else in my band.

I do both. It varies by song and instrument.

Well I do both on my trombone. Apparently my band class will be performing in June or whatever and the song our teacher had us improvised. When compared to the sheet music we play (Sword Of Kings and Knights of the round table) You can tell its improvised. Dont get me wrong our song sounds amazing, freaking beast but you can tell we are not reading from paper.

I dont know which I prefer better though. I like em both. ^__^ My opinion is you should be balanced and learn how to do both.

Hearing it then playing it makes me feel awesome. Reading it is cool, too. I don't really have a preference.

To me, music is the art of sonic expression. I say ANY music playing is just grand. It's alot like language though. Some people can speak it, some can read it, some are poets, some are public speakers, some are comedians, some are just shootin' the breeze. Personally, I don't think you can place value on someone's message just because it is communicated though a method than your own. For me, as a kinda sorta musician, I just wish I had more of an attention span to actually practice enough to get good at it.

Accurate playing, though it takes a great deal of dedication and practice.

I haven't played the sax in over 10 years, but I can read sheet music for it and remember about 90-95% of the fingering for the notes.

Guitar though, I can only play by ear.

I can play by ear on my sax too. Actually, a few concerts we did, I lost some sheet music and just played along (I had memorized the songs by then though)

In my opinion, both are pretty important but as long as you have one or the other, it doesn't really matter that much. The fact that you can play in itself is a great thing. However, I wish I was able to play by ear better. It'd definitely help when improvising jazz pieces. After playing the piano for over 15 years, my sight reading is fine but I depend on the sheets since I can't play by ear that well. Which means that I can't really expand my creativity and the pieces I keep playing over and over will usually sound the same.

I admire those who can play by ear. I always need to find the (violin) sheet music whenever I want to play something. I would love to learn how to play by ear.
