Self explanatory topic question:

Any anime you watch that seemed awesome in the previews, announcement articles (about who is involved, voice cast, etc), recommended by others stuff like that

But when you watched it, it didn't turn out as good as it was made to be?

Guilty Crown, from the previews I thought it would be some great show (I even thought, hey, seems like Code Geass, could be good) the character designs and music seemed great and all but did this show lose me fast

Definitely "Guilty Crown", and so far "K" this season.

Sword Art Online for me.

My review got a lot of thumbs downs, but it's how I really feel. I feel like the episodes are mediocre.

The concept is great, yes, but the dialogues and plot are so repetitive and characters aren't that deep.

I'm judging based on the anime alone, maybe the light novels are different, I don't know, I didn't read them.

But they could have done something more with it... if I were the director I would have done things differently.

I would have used a lot of symbolism and used a more subtle approach to things rather than a linear plot that makes perfect sense.

Hyouka
Sword Art Online
Eureka Seven AO
Serial Experiments Lain (when I asked for psycholical animes, a lot of people said this one was great. No it wasn't, it was mostly boring).
Toaru Majutsu no Index s2
Zero no Tsukaima s4

Definitely Guilty Crown. The the quality of the artwork misled me to think it would actually be a decent anime...

For me it was AnoHana.

I heard a lot about this anime being particularly great and its 28th ranking on MAL seemed to support that, but I was disappointed by the anime as a whole. It was by no means bad, it simply undershot my inflated expectations.

Kids on the Slope, sadly. In the end it was just another high school drama.

I don't know how much it was hyped, but I expected big things from Blast of Tempest this season, and has been just good. Although the last episode (5) showed some promise. We'll see how it goes. Second one was Cowboy Bebop. It was great, but not nearly as spectacular for me as people seem to say. Although a lot of the hype might also be because it's one of the best dubbed series I've seen. Other than that, there's:

Darker than Black
Mononoke
Elfen Lied (I've heard the Manga kicks the shit out of the anime though)
The Future Diary
Eureka Seven

I'd say Elfen Lied. I felt like the kids only were loving it for the gore, because the story really wasn't there. And all the loose ends at the end just made me scratch my head in confusion for a while, until I learned that it had gotten a similar treatment that Fullmetal Alchemist did; with making up a new ending just for the anime because the manga was only half complete.

I am a little bit surprised that a lot of people are underwhelmed with Sword Art Online. I was loving it so much that I immediately started in on the novels while I was waiting for new episodes to air.
