The culture these days is internet driven. The fast paced environment needs something catchy that will entertain the minds of the ever shrinking attention spans of the people. In my opinion, this is why the music today doesn't seem to be very well thought out. I've noticed most songs are about the same thing and many of the same words or phrases are used. When one does find a good song or band, they tend to stick with it, knowing that there is, in fact, a creative mind out there willing to give it their best.

What disturbs me more is that the 20's is called 21st.

I've heard some pretty awful old songs, but they're hardly played anymore. It's easy to think the old music is best when all the terrible old music has fallen into complete obscurity.

Anyway, technology is such that you can easily listen to thousands of songs and select as many of your favorites as you want for an hours long custom playlist that you can listen to from a pair of earphones connecting to your pocket. Thinking of it in that light, I'd say music has improved dramatically in recent years.

There is a single band, just one that I have found to make excellent music in the 21st century. they are an Alternative rock band called Cage The Elephant. That is it other than that I absolutely despise 21st century pop music, rap music, country, and techno with a passion.

Don't listen to the radio for this reasoning. Though, it's all subjective. I have been listening to a lot of Foreigner, REO Speedwagon, Styx and a few other classics from that era.

There's lots of good music being made you just have to look really hard for it. EL-P, Amon Tobin, Squarepusher, DJ Shadow, Killer Mike, DJ Food, RJD2 and The Budos Band all put out great albums in 2012 just to name a few. Pop music has and always will be for mass consumption and made for profit not artistic merit. If you're looking for good new music Spoitfy is your best friend right now...

Also, Skrillex and other "Brostep" acts are complete shit. I'm also completely dumbfounded by all these pop artists churning out house singles that sound straight out of 1994. Talk about being late to the party... This is just my opinion so don't be offended is you love that tripe...

I think every generation has it's fair share of bad pop music the reason no one remembers the bad stuff is because it's been a long time and were to busy remembering the good stuff (or at least the memorably terrible stuff). Me personally I'm not totally against today pop music and I can almost guarantee 10-20 years from now acts like Justin Bieber, Katy Perry, And Rhianna will be long forgotten about when we look back at music from the 2000's/ early 2010's

I wish we had more of that going for us these days.

Kid Koala's 12 bit blues is amazing. It's post modern blues / hip hop and all recorded live on an old SP1200. Pillowfight the new Dan the Automator joint is also great... I could list quite a few more new albums that are awesome. My point is the music is out there you just have to dig for it...

If I hear one more song about Taylor Swift's ex-boyfriends I'm going to have to take matters into my own hands.

It's just harder to find now, I know a lot of original artists doing stuff no one was experimenting with before and mainly with hip hop, being far more clever with samples and structure. Mainstream sucks cuz it turned to an industry, got taken over by people who have no interest in music so the airwaves are usually packed with awful repetitive easily digestible sounds for the conformist masses, just makes underground ohhh so much sweeter! (:
