It is because so many songs that are popular now are based off of making money. Teens like music, so why not make songs about what teens like? This include love songs, partying, ect. Also, a bad voice with a good image wont sell so why not make that pretty girl have an amazing voice as well with some computer work? It's all about money now, and less and less about making good music.

So I was listening to 80's music on the radio the other day (ipod died) and goddamn. If those were the best songs of the 80's how the hell did we survive the decade? Terrible and generic hair metal bands, aggressively saccharine pop music, and...Abba.

I feel reaffirmed in my statement that music has always been 90% horrible, generic, and made with the express purpose of making money.

Pop music is made for mass consumption and money, and that's it. Artistic merit doesn't even figure into it. If you really want to find some good music you gotta dig for it. Either in the crates or the deep underground of the interwebs, but beware of hipsters proclaiming false prophets. That shit will be a distant memory in 2 months... it is what is is... Also Spotify is the best thing for finding new music. It's essentially a search engine for music.

Hey like what you want, but Tyga and Wiz Khalifa are straight trash. There is a whole world of hip hop that isn't that fake ass wack shit. No offense intended, but if you really listened to hip hop you would know that shit is trash.... youtube EL-P or Del or or even go old school and listen to some Tribe or Public enemy. This retarded ring tone rap makes me sick...

I'm sure this has been said, but I think it's difficult to judge the music of a certain time period unless you lived through it. It's easy to say that the 60s and 70s produced better music, but in reality there was a lot of crap then too. The reason it seems like there was so much less crap is because the crap isn't what gets remembered. Forty years from now we won't be remembering the garbage. Plenty of great music is still being made and it will be what stands the test of time.

There has been crappy pop music designed to take a quick buck from kids almost since the invention of the phonograph. It is not as new as it seems, though technology has made it easier to slap together prefab teen pop. We will know if any of today's music is good retrospectively in 20 years when today's teens are in their thirties, and oldies stations catering to them pop up. They usually don't play the stuff that was garbage on nostalgia formats, just the stuff people want to hear again as adults with more refined tastes.

Aphex Twin, Baroness, Coldplay, Converge, Deftones, Devin Townsend, The Dillinger Excape Plan, Eisley, The Fall of Troy, Incubus, Kimbra, Mastodon, Minus the Bear, Opeth, Periphery, Protest the Hero, Radiohead, Reso, SikTh, Sucre, TesseracT, and Third Eye Blind.

These are all artists that have made good music within the last 12 years (prog metal much? lol). All of this is more than enough to keep me satisfied with today's music.

Regarding the pop-music scene: People can listen to whatever they want. I may hate pop music, but if I actually cared enough to push my tastes onto other people I would be eternally disappointed and met with just as much hate. I can't afford to worry about it; I don't think others should worry either.
