I do hate most modern music, unless it's by an old band, like if the Beatles were still alive and decided to make another album. Probably fantasy, but I like old music. And old bands. Occasionally "For Those About To Rock" or "Jukebox Hero" and if it's a lucky day, I get some Guns and Roses, that kind of stuff pops on and I karaoke in the van with my grandfather.

It's nothing new. Music was bad then, and it's bad now. It's just about finding the good stuff, that you can survive someone's ranting about how amazing the bad is. I honestly don't know how I'd survive Nicki Minaj and Lil Wayne if I didn't have The Foreigners or ACDC to switch to...Times always change. Tens years later there'll be something else, the Harlem Shake will be "old" and they'll come up with a Hamster Dance remake. Oh, and the Cupid Shuffle will be banned in America with the ChaCha Slide.

I'm a retro guy, I'll admit it. I should be sucked into the media with the rest of my youth, biased into hating on classic shit and thinking that the Harlem Shake and Katy Perry are the best things in the world, but I am a retro person. Fuck them, I want to feel old. I'm not, but I want to.

I'm just a pathetic 18-year old who hates the same kinds of shit that will be hated 20 years from now, only with a new name, new beats, and new visuals in 4080p or whatever. So...Do any fanboys or fangirls want to kill me now?

Not all of it is horribly made nowadays. Ever here of countries outside of America? Yeah, they make some good music, too.

One thing to note. Youtube has given younger people access to all sorts of older music. Pre-youtube, and pre-internet... people were stuck listening to whatever was on the radio, or whatever they could afford to buy.

But today, you can basically get access to any style of music since recording media was invented.

This generation, despite being younger, has more access to the past, than the previous... A kid today may introduce his parents to music from the 1920s or 30s.

The 90's were the low point, 80's rocked. As for now, a lot of it's a bit dull, but if you look into the rock/metal bands you can find some good stuff. Just avoid rap and hip/hop and I guess most of the pop charts.

Most of the people I talk to who say this are the children of people who were teenagers or in their early 20's in the 80's. Not saying that only those people feel that way or even that all of those kids feel that way. It's just been my experience that when ever someone said this to me they were usually like three when the 90's ended and their parents are still stuck on that Duran Duran or White Snake song they danced to at they're prom. The 90's were awesome for music IMO, and marked the advent or maturation of some of the best musical sub genres. Acid Jazz, trip hop, french house, neo soul, grunge etc. all really took off in the 90's. And as others have stated some of the best hip hop is from that decade.
I do personally feel that American mainstream music (the stuff that gets the most radio air play is what I'm mostly referring to) has really declined in the last decade. My personal theory is that Clear Channel's strangle hold on radio coupled with the fact that record charts include airplay in their ranking formulas, the evaporation of musical education in public school's since the early 2000's, and the RIAA's obsession with obstructing fair use and regional restrictions have all had a significant negative impact on the quality of popular American music.

I'm not too displeased. I'm enjoying some of the rap/hip hop. Some just gradually grows more shitty, but I'm digging some of it. Along with some rock.

My view on music is that in America, it peaked in the 60s-70s and 80s, the 90s were a cool-down period in my opinion, i HAVE to ask the members of this site there opinion on the poorly made, often terrible music being made in the 21s century, why is this happening? What happened to the greatness of music?

While there are SOME good bands being made now like "Icon for Hire", there nothing compared to the greatness of the past era's, like metal gods Black Sabbath, Pop rock gods Fleetwood Mac, and many other artists of the various musical genre's we have experienced.

Music being made now is mostly repeated lyrics and senseless and poorly thought out back-round sound...as for the instrumental quality that has declined as well.

I have to ask, why has this happened? What do you people think?

Above is me being a pessimistic moron

This is what i think now

Okay, so i was in large part being a pessimistic moron, i have trouble with broad sweeping statements, one of my life goals is to be a wise/knowledgeable person that looks on things from as many sides to get the best answer, i am not wrong that a lot of the music now is crap, but i was very wrong to label all music being made now bad, some of it is actually very good. For instance the new album Om just put out, in 2012, i thought that was amaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaazing.

You just need to dig to find the good stuff, and while that is sad, its a fact and we have to live with it. But do not get me wrong, ask the right person "Like my brother for instance" and you could really find some awesome bands, you just have to ask the right questions, as well as the right people.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
you say all or most music and bands today are crap. i have to disagree. there are some really good bands and artists out there. you might just need to broaden your horizons and go out and meet new or different people from all walks of life, don't stay in that bubble pop out of it and go out into the world. and i assure you, you will be introduced to a lot of different genres and artists you've never even heard of before.

Not at all, mainly because I haven't bothered caring about all the mainstream stuff playing on the radio and such nowadays. This is mainly due to the fact that I mostly listen to classical or instrumental music. To me, nothing beats out the harmonious tune of a piano or violin.

Hmmm well every 1 is entitled to their own opinion. And as for the instrumental and back round music now, what do you dislike about it? If it displeases you just switch stations or songs. I'm sure growing up and even now other ppl, dislike what you enjoy listening to. Everybody has thier preference. Music changes throughout time. Most artists sample beats and lyrics from other artists. That's why there are so many artists that have a similar sound. I actually love instrumental, typically electronica. I'm a bass head I love Dnb. But I listen to many different genres so I can go from DnB to classical and listening to The Cure or Whiz Khalifa to the Deftones or AraabMUZIK. I love music, I wont say 1 particular genre or artist is bad but I think quite a few songs in the 90's were pretty awful, but then again that's just my opinion.

Well, everyone's opinion of what is "poorly made" differs vastly.

Everyone is obviously disturbed by what they think is poorly made, and this extends beyond music. Duh.

The topic is highly opinionated. I will agree that a lot of crap is being made today, though. Maybe it's because I don't enjoy the rap/hip hop stuff being made (Which seems to be the most popular). But I can still enjoy some of the stuff made today.

Almost all my music is from the mid 90's and earlier, or if newer, are bands that started in the mid 90's and earlier, and are still playing the same stuff today (like nofx for example)

The other half of my music is random japanese stuff and tohou albums heh

Times are changing so I wouldn't say it's all that poorly made.
