Post Reply Who here is disturbed by the poorly made music in the 21st century?

there will always be bad music, depending on whos view.

Back in 70s disco was looked down on,
in the 50's rock and roll was the culprit.
Not everyone is going to agree on which music is good.

The only thing I'm sure is Music is music.

It's all about money and popularity in this age Talent is discarded.
Luckily only those who work hard for what they earn and who have a great love for what they do are the ones that remain.

Was thinking this today driving to work. 8 pre-set station and can't get 1 good song off any of them, ended up surfing and still found zip. even pandora failed me on all 28 stations.

i mean i understand times change but my favorite genre (Country) shouldn't change that much, to the point they put hip/hop and pop in the songs.

Miss those older days more and more

During my 6 week stay in Canada I've been listening a bit to country on the radio (no such thing where I live) and indeed even country has changed from being meaningful and a joy to mainstream pop music with a southern twist.

My solution is radio off and plugging the iPhone in.

Honestly, splitting it up into year groups seems slightly hypocritical to me. Sure, a lot of great music was made in the 60's right up to the 90's, and then hip hop, R&B, rap, mainstream pop etc. started coming to light. There was crap music back then too believe it or not, you just never listened to it because what was 'hip and cool' back then was what is now not so popular. So why people are freaking out over it nowadays is beyond me, besides the fact that mainstream pop and R&B requires absolutely no talent to produce.

It's genre you should be pin pointing at. I listen to a ton of modern rock, alternative rock, and pop punk, in which the artists have a lot of skill. It's nice to see unedited voices and genuine talent still appreciated by a lot of people. Just because the more popular music choice of today is utter garbage, doesn't mean you have to listen to it. Sure, you can't help hearing background noise if something's playing in the streets or whatever, but in that case just stick a headphone in! It's not like you're the only person in the world listening to it, they'll always be someone who likes your music choice as well.

My personal music taste is bands like You Me At Six, Young Guns, We Are The In Crowd, Deaf Havana etc...

As always there will always be differences in opinion.
What I would regard as a fact is that overall in society (not just in the music industry) is that there is less experimentation and progression in thinking. Nobody innovates. Nobody is really trying new things or those who are are either too afraid or pushed aside so the progression never reaches the light of day. We just rehash the same stuff year in year out. It used to be that the cyclic nature of fashion and music were decades apart, but not the cycles are getting tighter and tighter to the point where nobody is producing anything new at all.
Fashion never having been an interest in mine, the state of affairs in music really does do my head in. I have no interest in "popular music". It's either mass-produced (I call it iPod culture production) or written by for or about a demographic I cannot identify with or have little interest in.
Don't get me wrong, I still find the occasional tune that gets me humming or has an addictive beat but music produced in the last 10-20 years never seems to move me like music from way back when used to. I remember hearing Toccata and Fugue in D Minor for the first time when I was really small and wee and feeling prickles up my spine from the Organ.
And its not just classical. I love my rock and metal, some jazz and country (a very general term for some very niche types of music I know but I can't sit here all day listing genres and artists...work to do!). Rock n Blues. I even listen to a bit of rap now and again.
I'm not saying its all amazing - a great deal I can take or leave but no matter what the song, the music would always make me sit up and form an opinion.
Now I can sit and listen to a dozen tracks on the radio and unless the chorus is hellishly repetitive or monotonous I won't remember a thing about the track once its ended and probably won't even notice the start of the next similar-sounding track. It's music that is offensive in its generic inoffensiveness. I'd almost rather actively hate a track (queue Some Black Rapper disrespecting yet another bunch of young women or men who probably don't know any better) than be thoroughly unphased by it. At least it means that its getting some form of reaction!
Just my two cents from a 23 year old going on Old.

Well as a person who loves the older than dirt classical, opera, and folksongs, I can say that no music hasn't gotten worse, it's simply people have more access to a wider verity which creates the illusion that there is more bad than good, music is ninety percent taste ten percent originality.
I will concede the point that "mainstream" lacks originality, but that is simply due to having a formula that work's for there audience. If you go to search around on google, youtube, or whatever for a music genera you like chances are you will hate nine out of ten songs on each page, but on the other hand there could be tens of thousands of songs, it's not a matter of music being worse simply harder to find a specific song to match a taste.
As a example I hate rap, but I put aside that hate and spent a few hours searching. I probably listened to a hundred horrible songs for ever one I liked but after a while I did find a few decent songs and even a group or two I liked.

I couldn't agree more.

Puccini's Madama Butterfly was considered bad in his time period... but nowadays it's considered a masterpiece.

Who knows, maybe in the next 100 years, Justin Beiber will be considered a rock god.

The bottom line is... people's musical tastes will evolve with time and society.

It's all mental programming for the human mind. They all have subliminal messages that are meant to control.
