Personally, I don't care for the music from the 60's and 70's. I like what's comming out recently from bands like, All That Remains, Shadow Fall , Straight Line Stitch, and the like. Good hard stuff. The idea of music "meaning something" is bunk to me. For me, it's all about the sound of the music, lyrics be dammned. Hell I'd listen to the crap Brittney Spears sings about if only she sounded like Slayer......

There are still good music, underground talents. It's just hard to find them since the music industry today in the 21st century is full of biased publicity.

There are some good music still out there. I am a bit disappointed in it though with the lyrics they hold now days. I had to ask a few of my friends to read the lyrics of their favorite songs just for fun. They even ended up being disappointed once they took a look to find out the song was talking about ether "smoking weed , sex , drugs , being shot , getting drunk" and etc. It kind of disturbs me to see little kids singing the songs not even knowing what their saying. There isn't even creativity in the songs anymore it just talks about the same thing just worded differently its ether "wanting a girl to go out with them or want a girl in your bed" "want to go out with a boy or want a boy in your bed'' ''Break up songs" "getting wasted" "Kissing or Sex" I can't find one song on the radio now that isn't in that category

Music is no better or worse than it was in past decades. It's just different. There's bad, there's good. Back in the day, there was bad, and there was good. Maybe people are just remembering the good and forgetting the bad.

There is always good music in every era it's just that it's getting harder and harder to find in north america. I like music where artists can actually play their instruments and are creative. That's why i have turned to metal as the music of choice now. I started listening to it a while ago and have never looked back. If you want to listen to a piece of awesomeness then check out this Wintersun song off their new album. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cZB6JVllJSg.

Eh, I wouldn't say all of it terrible. It's mainly the songs that make it main stream.

Of course music of all genres is released every year, so you can't say all of the music from the 21st century is horrible :P

So my opinion on why main stream music in the 21st is horrible is due to two things.

1.) Tastes are changing. New music styles are coming into existence, creating more variety and pushing out all the old favourite genres.

2.) New generation and media. The media of course is always looking for the 'new' things in society and advertising them as heavily as possible. This makes the new generation stop and think, "mm, this is good. And it's new" and so it continues from there.

I for one don't actually mind most of the songs that make it main stream. Then again, I like all sorts of music and I'm a youngin', so I don't really have much else say on this matter. >.<'

This all comes down to your mindset... Ask anyone that lived while the Beatles were the shit, and ask if one of them if "linkin park's, eminem's or Avicii" were great. They probably couldn't listen to the songs from those artists for a long period of time like anyone that was born in the 90's can. And this will happen to me too, when I hit the 30's or more, I will be like "damn this music sucks of this generation"

This should just stop, it's your brain that is saying "I don't like this because I liked that, when my brain was younger" -.-

But that said, I will agree with that most of the lyrics of today, have been less and less meaningful and more focused on catchy chorus -_-
Ex. *Gangnam style*
But I wouldn't say that it's as bad as people think it is.

I don't know what people are talking about when they say the 21st century is full of terrible music. It's just as mixed in terms of quality as it ever has been.
I feel like people far too often associate popular music (what many people listen to, what plays on the radio, ect.) with "music of our generation". I imagine the "music of our generation" would be every song ever written and produced in that time period, not what happened to be popular.
Speaking of, pop music really isn't all that bad either. Not as bad as people make it out to be, not any worse than it ever has been.
People overreact to the music playing often these days, I almost wonder if they even listen to music of a genre they like that came out in the recent years. Honestly, I'm impressed with some of the work that was released this year, popular or not.

I just straight up ignore the bad and search for the good. Also side note, I'm not from anywhere below the 90's, so any music before that I probably don't really listen to. Derp.

Almost of my favorite artists are pretty much what the society/the mainstream doesn't know or follow (i.e. Crow's Claw, Girugamesh, Pizuya's Cell, Lotus Juice, Dimrain47... etcetc.), so my general attitude whenever questioned is just "Take it or leave it bro". =w=

My view on music is that in America and throughout the world, it peaked in the 60s-70s and 80s, the 90s were a cool-down period in my opinion, i HAVE to ask the members of this site there opinion on the poorly made, often terrible music being made in the 21s century, why is this happening? What happened to the greatness of music?

While there are SOME good bands being made now like "Icon for Hire", there nothing compared to the greatness of the past era's, like metal gods Black Sabbath, Pop rock gods Fleetwood Mac, and many other artists of the various musical genre's we have experienced.

Music being made now is mostly repeated lyrics and senseless and poorly thought out back-round sound...as for the instrumental quality that has declined as well.

I have to ask, why has this happened? What do you people think?

I havent really thought i about this much, i do admit that most song that are popular now, i tend to dismiss them without thought. I liked the music and songs i like, like Breaking Benjamin, Linkin Park, Within Temptation, and usually avoid any song that is too repetitive. I just look for songs that i like instead of bands or artist. It all personal preference i guess, and i listen to many different type of song as well. I dont really think songs of this generation is BAD per say but i dont like it. As for earlier songs, cant comment b/c i dont listen to them (unless it a spanish song, then i give it a try) and not interested in listening to them either.
