The closest thing to SAO is a phone app called IRUNA. Its great you have HP and MP and you can have friends and join guilds, parties to fight off strong monsters and level up. you can go on quest to earn cash, there are many different beautiful worlds to go to and the graphics are great!!!! Meet people from all around the world. I was playing the other day and I met a girl from Malaysia I'm from Boston, MA. I'm only at lvl 22 but I've seen people at lvl 80 something.

I love this game all you have to do download the app to your phone or tablet.

Friend me I'm Misaki_

I would love to play a Sword Art Online MMORPG. The tut could start off in the big city in beginning of the Anime. It could feature a skill level up system. You could cut down a tree for wood. To make a fire. To cook a fish you caught earlier by fishing or that you bought in town. And use the food to train. You could also Mine materials and gather from monster drops. Smelt it down and smith yourself weapons and armor. level your appraisal skill by examining a lot of monster drops. Each level of tower would have houses for purchase. The game could implement a marriage system which could give players a shared storage box. And would also give the couple a 10% xp boost when training together. You could also level your attack to be more accurate. Level your strength to hit harder. And your defense to be able to defend better and receive less damage. Pvp could exists. There could be normal Servers where if you die you don't lose your character. And hardcore server where if you die your character is gone for good. For the Hardcore fans that truly want to live the experience. Also the game could be team work orientated. Most mmorpg's you can solo to the end. But throwing massively powerful bosses in each dungeon could force teamwork and build a great community. Imagine if each time a raid enter a dungeon a aura appears in the air above the town you in and you can watch the boss fight.

The biggest problem with mmorpg's now days is there is nothing to do. You grind for 100s of hours to reach max level. Then there is nothing to do except pvp. With a skill system atleast you have other skills to work on after you max your combat level.

My friends and I watched Sword Art Online and ever since episode one we were already wishing something of the like existed. I would love nothing more than to come home from a stressful day at work, lay in bed, put on a head gear and travel into a MMO world.

You all know we are getting there on the controller end of it all. I mean we have loads of MMOs out there. The tech is even catching up slowly. It will take time but we are getting there. They already have a Neuro-controller in trial runs. There is also a new virtual reality system a company named Oculus that has a 110 degree field of view so you never see the edges of the screen. Link: http://www.oculusvr.com/. Also the Neuro headset is produced by a company known as Emotive. They have a headset in trial now called the Epoc. With the computer programming installed you can play games with just though. I own one of the headsets and training on it takes time but I can play MMOs just by thought and some keyboard usage now. Link: http://emotiv.com/. Give it time we will be in the SAO world soon enough lol.

Now, to get a developer to couple it with something like
http://www.neurosky.com/Products/MindWaveMobile.aspx

We get the closest thing to NerveGear for now.

The Emotiv EPOC software allows it to be adaptable with other games not specifically designed for it (EmoKey), so it should be compatible with the Oculus Rift by default. The only real restriction on that would be the fact that, so far, only two games are ready for the Rift (Hawken and DOOM3).

LeapMotion will pretty much work with everything by default, as it's just another input device.

Can't wait :3

Stuff

Just wanted to expand on this a bit...

Lots of interesting discussion here, and some interesting speculation on when this will all be available. I'm not going to throw numbers around, as we are fast approaching a point where technology is going to explode is what it can do. I'm going to talk about where we are now, and a new technology on the horizon that will redefine everything and quite possibly make the NerveGear real.

A real life NerveGear will be needed in order to recreate 100% immersion in a virtual space. We are starting to get closer with some of our current VR tech, but we NEED much better. As a Transhumanist, I literally see the next stage of our evolution as the merging of the real and the digital. To merge humans with technology. Sounds crazy? Perhaps, but if you want SAO, this is the road we need to take.

Where we are now!
Current VR tech is starting to enter the mainstream and allow immerse experiences that will far eclipse all that we currently know and love in gaming. The following below is a sampling of where we are.

The Oculus Rift: http://www.oculusvr.com/ Everybody know about this that is into the VR scene at all. The inventor of the Rift, Palmer Luckey has also stated he is READY for competition, but the Rift is very important because it will bring VR SIGHT into the mainstream at an affordable price. If the Rift takes off, expect to see more VR Head Mounted Displays make their way into the market, likely on the higher end of the spectrum.

The Emotiv: http://www.emotiv.com/ This is a brainwave reading device that allows you to set various actions along with your thoughts. For those that are into big fancy words, it specifically is a consumer Electroencephalography system. This area is a biiiit rough at the moment, but does work! I've tried it myself. Think of it as like training to use the FORCE. Think about lifting a rock, and you lift the rock. The only downside at the moment is you have to use the FORCE for well... everything. Imagine trying to use the force to switch guns all the time, turn left, turn right. We are getting there, needs some improvement still.

Omni-directional Treadmill: Virtuix Omni! http://www.virtuix.com/ Being able to walk/run around the world while in your living room is important to a proper VR experience. These fellows are making a omnidirectional treadmill that will enable us to walk around in a virtual world without knocking into IRL walls. A video of a prototype is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hpYJXrDHOBk Support these people! A Kickstarter will be done in May to help get these people going!

WHERE WE ARE HEADED!!!!
So the above is just three things that are getting us there, but how are we ultimately going to be able to experience SAO? Mapping the brain and understanding how the electrical signals that the body sends to the brain are done so that we may replicate this. Thankfully.... we are on the way.

The leader of this field is Sheila Nirenberg who is trying to develop a Bionic eye that will cure blindness. She is working on reverse engineering how the mind understands the signals. If we can do this and duplicate 20/20 vision, then we can then take the same electrical engineering techniques and start learning how our brains understands the rest of our senses. Here is a TED Talk from her on this.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aa2JfigaNcs

I can not stress enough how important Sheila's research is for us. Her goal is to cure the blind, a noble goal indeed. The VR applications of her work however, are staggering to contemplate.

Aeria Games got rights to create a MMO based on SAO.

Someone made a thread on it somewhere. Doubt it will be VR though.

I love how 2/3 of the technologies in the posts above have demo videos using Skyrim. It bodes well for the future of RPGs/MMOs. It's exciting to think about an SAO game whether it would be VR or not in my opinion as long as it was as amazing as the anime and light novels. The PSP one hasn't gotten good reviews sadly even though I was thinking about buying one just to play it I'm glad I didn't I guess. I hope they will make another one for consoles in the future =/

Its an interesting concept but for it to work, the MMO's community would have to work together like they did in the Anime/novel (whatever you have seen or read). how likely is it that people will work together like that? Now, if we had the nerve gear tech it could be better because then people are kind of face to face and that might entice the players to work together a bit better. idc if people dont work together though, if the SAO mmo ever comes into existence im buying 3 copies, 1 for me and 2 for a little bit of extra cash down the creators of the REAL SAO.'s pockets
