This is a theory that I've learnt in Biochemistry.
Our species was able to survive because we've developed this massive brain... this is believed to be caused by our ancestors eating a lot of fish.
And as you know fish contain a lot of Omega-3 fatty acids which is crucial to brain development in adolescents. So this Omega-3 is responsible for the bigger brain size in humans.
Bigger brain means that we're able to build tools more efficiently and communicate with one another more effectively.
Whereas the Neanderthals did not develop the same size of brain and were probably hunted down by wolves or tigers or possibly even modern humans might have killed them off.

It seems there was interbreeding with Neanderthal and Denisovans (discovered only two years ago). It was in order to get the haplo something or other that would help the later generations of humans who got out of Africa stave off diseases unknown to them. Denisovan's were supposedly quite large judging from the teeth found.
It's said that Europeans have up to 3% neanderthal DNA and modern folk around Indonesia, Philippines and Fiji with the highest concentration in native populations in Australia and Papua New Guinea having up to 6% Denisovan DNA.
Further it's said that Europeans who migrated to Australia and got down with the natives are purportedly to have both neanderthal and Denisovan DNA in them.
They still remain with us; barely, but they are with us.
Humans of bygone times gone extinct... I reckon they're still thriving around but live like mole people underground along with countless others. And will one day pop out.

The human race was created by extraterrestrial/extra dimensional beings.
And for anyone that says that Neanderthals had smaller brains and were less intelligent than modern humans are wrong. Neanderthals had larger brains for their size which means they are likely more intelligent than modern humans. They were also massively stronger than modern humans.
There is new evidence that Neanderthals had culture, writing, and language. Everything we know about the history of the human race is wrong.
