If it was the Nerve Gear I'd have to say no, Amusphere on the other hand maybe. The idea of VR gaming is a really neat idea and would change the gaming world as a whole, but SAO did a real good job describing the HUGE ethical issue of being cut off from reality especially with how huge hacking has been as of late. Once we can get past that major issue it might actually happen, but I doubt it'll happen in the time that say SAO is saying or even Accel World for that matter.

As for the Occulus, I can see one issue with it unless they fixed it. That those that have to wear glasses might have issues being able to use it.

They could always wear contacts... lol

I'm game this world sucks anyway lol with any luck people will have developed it by the year 2022 just like in the show. I say that because by the time it'd be developed I will have just finished attaining my masters in teaching. As for the OculousRift I'm dabbling in game design attempting to make a decent game that me and my friends would be able to play together. Were trying to make it something like SAO but with minor differences like re-playable boss battles and a different leveling system.

you guys talk about uploading your "mind" into the game, but u have it all wrong. Its not about removing your mind / soul from your body into a virtual world at all.

It is about receiving information while you are in a dream-like state that makes you interact with a world with other different people. Which I think is very much possible since our brain is just like a computer, and downloading data will be possible SOMEDAY in the future.

Well, actually, our brains mostly disconnect from the rest of our bodies everytime we sleep and dream; to make sure we don't act out those dreams. So...sleepwalking (or sleep-whatever-ing) is the result of that disconnet not happening and Sleep paralysis is the brain forgeting to re-connect.

TL;DR: A irl NervGear would just need to mimic what the body does during sleep.

Nerve Gear would be awesome, great way to justify K/D ratio and human behavior for judging others in a video game...kill them off.

Basicly, there is absolutely no reason to compete in a video game unless you have something to brag about (F2P games would fail without a ranking score system because most short attention span ADHD kiddies would get bored after 30 minutes without something to attract their attention like a shiny object to keep them playing a video game), but because your K/D is so high that commen sense is turned off and you judge people that because their K/D is lower then yours, they are trash....like judging people by their skin color or race; and we all know what that kind of human behavior leads too . *shrug* Doesn't bother me if a video game kills video gamers, most dudes believe a Win/Loss or Kill/Death must mean something so everyone has to worship the ground they walk on and must look good on their credit score / facebook account next to relationship status to attact a partnet ...yet video gamers are nothing like a professional athlete because sitting in the comfort of your home clicking a mouse with the index finger still means you are a loser in real life except you are just awesome in a video game.

^-- tl,dr aspect : Video gamers (lol at professional gamers, plain gamers are just casual people like hobbists) are losers who belive in their own little world they are just awesome and judge other people by numbers, no different then judging people by race or skin color. God I hate those kinds of people, love to smash a brick upside their head and ask if a K/D still makes them a better person. So, yeah a defective piece of gaming hardware that can nuke your cerebellum like yesterday's left overs would be awesome.

So you don't judge people by their performance? In a situation for a work environment would you not fire someone for doing poorly in their job? Or hire someone who can perform the job better?

Video games are the same in concept. Someones K:D ratio is a measurement of how well they can perform. It's the same in your real life sports you seem to value so much, the better an athlete can perform the better they get paid. All you're doing is saying because it's virtual it has no holding, which is funny considering the professional gamers you mock make a living off of these virtual numbers and performances.

You're the type of person who makes me sick, because you're judging people based off their interests. Live and let live, it's the same shit no matter where you go.

[edit] Back on topic, I'd love a nerve gear. Even with the risks that are presented through the SAO story.

I'll be a guinea pig for when something like this may happen. Like previously stated this world does suck. Thought I feel we have a better chance of a zombie apocalypse happening first.

I don't think it would be possible to cut off a person's consciousness with just a wireless signal, not while maintaining cognitive functions.

I also doubt that a machine that size could create a microwave burst fast enough to fry your brain before it's ripped off from your head. I think that if you really looked into it, you'd find that there are a lot of problems with how insulated your nerves are you your body. And then you'd have further problems with how receptive your mind is to external signals. The best bet is for a visor with controller, like .hack.

Quite honestly, I think that if a Nerve Gear type system were to become a reality there would be multiple safety precautions taken to ensure that players aren't at any major risk. I mean if it can transport your brain and senses to an alternate reality, I'm sure that it can also auto logout a person from the game upon sensing any risks such as hunger or sleep deprivation to the user. Also I agree with the forks and knives statement, I don't think they should halt an idea just because there are people who would harm themselves with it.

On a completely different note, I would definitely buy Nerve Gear! xD
I completely agree that real life is definitely the best, but for all the times I'm bored or fed up with any real life problems, a literal escape to a different world would be nice. Plus, tons of people would play if something like this existed! It'd be cool to hang out with people in an MMO or something face to face, actually interact, go on an exciting adventure, and it just be a regular school night. I think it would also be a nice stress relief from school and what not, and in respect to danger, it sure is safer than just wandering the streets on weekends looking for something to do. Not to mention with the virtual reality being so close to real life and actually having you in the game, it would take away many of the anti social problems of typical online games. Players could actually interact with other real life people in game. It sure could help people that have problems socializing in real life situations.

Anyways, all the critical stuff aside, Bring on the Nerve Gear
