instead of nerve gear i would like the technology similar to the glasses in .hack or 1/2 prince or yureka the glasses don't cut you completely off from the real world but you can play while sleeping or awake. If used only during your average sleeping time they wouldn't interfere with you're daily life but you would still be able to enjoy the games, you'd be able to live a double life that wouldn't interfere with each other.

I think how it works is it grabs the signals telling your muscles to do whatever and converts them into controls, and also sends messages to the brain telling it that you see/fell whatever, the only thing I don't understand though, is how would you close your eyes in-game?

EDIT: I just figured it out; it would grab the signal telling your eyelids to close, and stop sending signals from "your eyes", and make it appear to other players as if your eyes were closed.

I actually have a theory of how it could work.

So use signals to send you mind into the dream state but immediately into the dream state and keep it there and then control the dream to fit the format of the game so that way it does add a little more personalization because people would pull DIFFERNT things to represent the object/area or whatever

When writing the above thing I realized that u know that guy that is trying to transfer the human mind into a machine well use that and transfer the human mind into a server and just run the game normally but code the game for tha purpose but now I realize that could be REALLY bad if a bug messed up the mind and stuff so yea..

i want to live in a virtual world, seeing as sometimes I feel so detached from this one. I don't care if it did kill thousands of people. I want to be in an SAO-like game!

Oh lord yes I would love the ability to feel like you could dive into a completely different world.. I have had so much fun playing mmo's in the past the idea of being to actually feel like I was there almost gives me a chill up my back.. I would pay silly amounts of money for the chance.

The oculus is obviously still a big step away but its a heck of a good step in the right direction and you bet I will buy one when they go commercial.

total immersion = yes. But as some people have been bringing up it wont happen due to the idiots that have died obsessively gaming while denying their bodily functions.
all in all i would jump at the chance to be part of a virtual feel and touch world if became available...

I feel the exact same with you on this one. The past 5 years, mmo's have gone to shit with the WoW Formula.
To be honest, just an MMO like ultima online where I can just go do shit by myself would be a good start. I'm a bit tired of babysitting people to be able to do anything.

I think you soarly forget what MMOs were like before WoW if you're complaining about them being group orientated now. Before WoW it wasnt uncommon to physically not be able to even level without being grouped up, let alone run even basic bosses...

I even pointed out a game where you didn't need a group to do anything, yet i "soarly" forgot what mmo's were like?
I can assure you, I've played alot of MMO's before the WoW formula and most of the ones where you needed major groups were usually Asian/korean mmo's which were massive grind fests to begin with. One of the exceptions would probably be Ragnarok Online, soloing in that game was viable.

So please, get your shit straight.

The major prewow mmos, anarchy online, lineage, dark age of chamelot, Everquest, ragnaroc online, asherons call. All of these were highly group dependant. Ultima really is a thing all on its own and didn't ever set the entire market (after there was a market). So really yes, things have never been better for solo players in mmos. And there's no need to be pointlessly offensive

I think this is probably about how it would work, but I think this would require a lot of testing though.
I do think there are safety issues, not least of which is a SOA type scenario, but does taking of the helmet, or whatever it is automatically bring you back to the real world, not because it is coded that way, but because your body works that way? If not couldn't a power outage leave you in a comma or sleep state indefinitely? You are talking about replacing all sensory data with sensory data from an electronic interface, while also disconnecting your muscles from getting signals, the way your body does when you sleep.

If you've ever woken up and couldn't move, that is sleep paralysis, your brain disconnects the signals it would otherwise send to your muscles when you sleep, otherwise you would sleep walk, when you wake up it reconnects them. To artificially manipulate that might also be dangerous. I think a long period of testing would be in order to guarantee it is safe, I can't imagine otherwise.

What if I trick you into thinking you've logged out, while you're actually in my own game, it looks just like the real world too, and I use that to steal all your passwords as an extreme version of a man in the middle attack. When you finally do log out I could have stolen money off your accounts, now it is sounding a lot like Inception, but you get the idea.
