I actually have a theory of how it could work.

So use signals to send you mind into the dream state but immediately into the dream state and keep it there and then control the dream to fit the format of the game so that way it does add a little more personalization because people would pull DIFFERNT things to represent the object/area or whatever

When writing the above thing I realized that u know that guy that is trying to transfer the human mind into a machine well use that and transfer the human mind into a server and just run the game normally but code the game for tha purpose but now I realize that could be REALLY bad if a bug messed up the mind and stuff so yea..

I think this is probably about how it would work, but I think this would require a lot of testing though.
I do think there are safety issues, not least of which is a SOA type scenario, but does taking of the helmet, or whatever it is automatically bring you back to the real world, not because it is coded that way, but because your body works that way? If not couldn't a power outage leave you in a comma or sleep state indefinitely? You are talking about replacing all sensory data with sensory data from an electronic interface, while also disconnecting your muscles from getting signals, the way your body does when you sleep.

If you've ever woken up and couldn't move, that is sleep paralysis, your brain disconnects the signals it would otherwise send to your muscles when you sleep, otherwise you would sleep walk, when you wake up it reconnects them. To artificially manipulate that might also be dangerous. I think a long period of testing would be in order to guarantee it is safe, I can't imagine otherwise.

What if I trick you into thinking you've logged out, while you're actually in my own game, it looks just like the real world too, and I use that to steal all your passwords as an extreme version of a man in the middle attack. When you finally do log out I could have stolen money off your accounts, now it is sounding a lot like Inception, but you get the idea.

True I get it but like in the show there should also be a battery in the device so if there is a power outage it would be able to keep going long enough to disconnect properly and for a computer crash I say make it so the device is the full device without needing to be in a computer kinda like a wii but you are the screen and for the tricking into logging out I say an EXTREAMLY harsh reviewing of all games updates
Patches and anything that gets sent to the player so there is absolutely no way of that happening also I think it would be pretty hard to complete an entire perfect complete replica of a persons world and then if u needed more than 1 person for that then that is WAY too much work even for a computer u you have to literally know every single fact about you and your life for each person

I don't care about the Oculus Rift. I want a real NerveGear, the device that will connect us to each other.
I want to play games like SAO, but I want to play it if it has a log out button. I also want to play Pokemon! xD

I think that if it were ever made that it would be highly protected and primarily for military purpose till its handed down to us. but it might not be in our life time which would suck.

http://www.newscientist.com/article/mg18624944.600-sony-patent-takes-first-step-towards-reallife-matrix.html

IMAGINE movies and computer games in which you get to smell, taste and perhaps even feel things. That's the tantalising prospect raised by a patent on a device for transmitting sensory data directly into the human brain - granted to none other than the entertainment giant Sony.

The technique suggested in the patent is entirely non-invasive. It describes a device that fires pulses of ultrasound at the head to modify firing patterns in targeted parts of the brain, creating "sensory experiences" ranging from moving images to tastes and sounds. This could give blind or deaf people the chance to see or hear, the patent claims.

Supposedly no device has been produced that actually produces said effects, but if Sony wasn't experimenting with this, why would they be spending time and energy to patent it?

Hmmm......

Also, a scientist has connected the minds of 2 rats over the internet, and using the mind link the rats work on a game for a reward.

http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/02/28/us-science-brain-mindmeld-idUSBRE91R0U620130228

(Reuters) - The scientists call it a "brain link," and it is the closest anyone has gotten to a real-life "mind meld": the thoughts of a rat romping around a lab in Brazil were captured by electronic sensors and sent via Internet to the brain of a rat in the United States.

The result: the second rat received the thoughts of the first, mimicking its behavior, researchers reported on Thursday in Scientific Reports, a journal of the Nature Publishing Group.

Adding to its science-fiction feel, the advance in direct brain-to-brain communication could lay the foundation for what Duke University Medical Center neurobiologist Miguel Nicolelis, who led the research, calls an "organic computer" in which multiple brains are linked to solve problems solo brains can't.

Science, making telepathy real, and the VR applications are astounding.

Oculus Rift is just a glorified monitor. It's nothing new, we had VR helmets like that back in the 90s in Arcades. Heck, some mech type arcade games had full on pods for you to get in with 360 camera view.
This crap is nothing new, just something you young'uns these days think is. Just like motion control. We had arcade games with body motion control long ago. Yet people think the Wii Nunchuks and the XBox Kinect is some innovation. Quit being so impressed by simple crap. Past the fancy looking helmet is just a freaking monitor.

This, we've had 3d, motion control virtual reality rubbish before and it always dies out

Thank you for posting this. I did not know that things like Oculus Rift were already being developed to where we can buy this experience in the near decade. I look foward to the future types of Nerve Gear and I hope this Oculus Rift thing comes out soon.
