Forgive my being a culinary philistine, but what in Dio's name is a Twinkie?

It's North American junk food, good man. A piece of sponge cake filled with fatty vanilla-flavored cream. Apparently, they're addictive.

Another company will buy up the rights to their recipes so I have a tough time seeing the Twinkie really going extinct.

Yes, exactly, the products will live on, just baked by someone else. Indeed, the company itself may reform, with the factories, recipes, and workers all put back in motion, but under a new entity. By "liquidating," it allows them to eliminate their pension obligations and forever tear up their collective bargaining agreements. But there is still value to be found, and it will be made to pay off. This is exactly what happened to the steel industry. Look up the brief, but lucrative history of the International Steel Group to see how it works.

I liked them as a treat as a kid, but they seem too simple as a treat for anyone older than 10 y.o. I found twinkies to be fairly tasteless.

Yeah, fuck healthcare and retirement plans(Unless you have to pay a lot of money for it from a private company that will screw you over when you finally have a serious condition).
Nobody needs that shit. It's just a drain on our economy(Universal healthcare will cost less than enforcing the fight on marijuana).
So yeah, screw you Obama, you hippy(Fiscally conservative) fascist.
Oh and on topic... I bet you'll be able to find Twinkees on eBay. I bet people will pay good money for them.

It's a long shaped sponge cake with cream inside... so basically an edible dick.
They're delicious though.

Ah, Wonder Bread. Removing the crust and rolling up the center into a hard, chewy ball. You could easily eat six slices of bread that way.
Frankly, I won't miss a company that makes the epitome of unhealthy food. We haven't bought their products in years. Some businesses don't need to be kept alive. People are moving to better food choices.
And unions may need to join them. They once served a great purpose, but now I'm not so sure. A union also tried that a few years ago where my husband works. The company was struggling and the union did not care. So, the company said that dept. would have to be shut down and they started to move it to a cheaper part of the country. The union eventually got the message and backed off. The company has since managed to pull back from the brink of disaster. While they don't offer the highest wages in the industry, there have been no lay-offs there during these tough times.
