Given the OP's scenario, I believe most people would be spending their time defending themselves and their possessions from their neighbors.

The most likely way a country would lose its power grid is through an organized terrorist attack. In 2008 Congress reported that a couple small nuclear devices exploded in the right places would create a large enough Electro Magnetic Pulse which would shut down 70 percent or more of the U.S. power system, and fixing it would take quite a while.

Solar storms could also cause power grids all over the world to shut down.

Depends on the severity of the powerloss.

For temporary emergency cases I have enough candles in my house to light/mildly warm my living room for at least a week and a half, an extra blanket put away in the closet in case of cold temperatures, 3/4 days worth of canned foods and other preservables and a few cartons of sterilized milk.
If I ration my food and drinks I can probably last a week before having to look for alternatives or help.

As for being completely powerless, I own a solar powered phone charger so I can charge my cellphone during the day and keep it on for radio broadcasts.
Aside from that I have a flashlight and a box of spare batteries.

For personal entertainment I have plenty of books, manga and western comics to read and there's always the beautiful outside.
And as others are also saying, I'll probably sleep some more.

In a more permanent situation however I'll likely be screwed if no help comes, but since I live in the middle of a city it'll have to be something of apocalyptic magnitude if no help is to come.

Thats very true, but solar storms are tracked and preparations would (hopefully) be made by the government, where a terror attack would come without warning. Also I disagree with your previous comment about poor people dealing with it fine. I think they would be the hardest hit, at least in America. Look what happens when blackouts occur in American cities, the poor people immediately begin looting and pillaging and preying upon each other. Anarchy rules. Compare that with the response of Japanese people during the tsunami when they bonded together to help each other with very little civil disobedience. There is such a disparity between the two cultures.

What I do during every power outage: read books and walk. Maybe some exercising.

I think, go for a walk, read books, study for exams. Electric is a convenience, things would be troublesome without it, but there are more things to do. I would probably sleep earlier too. it'd probably be mega dark out .w.

I'd say we'd be better off than we are now. Without the use of computers, TV, etc. we'd be much more active. However, the world would move much slower, and humanity might have to 'reinvent' electricity. Don't get me wrong here, the use of power in our lives is a great help for everyone, but it sorta burdens the way we live today.

well, first clarify is there or isn't there a reason for the electricity going out and then clarify if it's worldwide or only locally, next clarify what you meant by the electricity went out, because either the powers source stopped running or you're saying it no longer existed at all in your area, because honestly if it was just local i'd run my electronic devices with a gas powered generator or something , and if electricity didn't exist at all then i'd probably be playing sports or hunting for food and fun

If we revert back to medieval Europe, blacksmith.
If we revert back to America before 13 colonies, farmer/tribe warrior.
