For those people wanting to bash it because the second half was no longer a "death game" they need to seriously reprioritize. For one the "death game" aspect of it was something that could only go so far before it would become stale and therefore the author changed things up. The series as a whole offers plenty of events that are very much on par with that feeling if you give it a chance
Spoiler Alert! Click to show or hide and definately if they continue on into GGO, the new Aincrad in ALO and Alicization |

Click to show or hide and definately if they continue on into GGO, the new Aincrad in ALO and Alicization They where trapped for two years in a game that had 100 floors. That could easily have been a 25 episode anime or more if you allow for different story arches. Which it already kind of did they where just really short 1-2 episode stories. Apart from the aspect of losing someone (which is something you can explore without being trapped in a game) they never much touched upon the effect of a large amount of people being stuck there. Not from the perspective of those trapped nor especially from the outside world. |

I'm just mad that so much potential was wasted...they threw out all of the progress they made and turned fan service from low-medium to extremely high. Step-sister falling in love with him? Asuna being a helpless damsel in distress? Give me a break. Meanwhile in the second half we meet NOBODY worthwhile. Everyone shows up in one episode for fanservice.
Kirito is boring. He's beaten admins twice by means of pure plot device. His stats magically transferred from SAO, and all women magically love him. He turns women from normal human beings to incapable of speech. About the fan service - I can't count the number of times there are camera shots of his cousin's behind or the sexual advances on Asuna (haha his employees were tentacle creatures!) I keep seeing a flawed argument that any protagonist is a "gary stu", but that simply isn't the case. Kirito has shown illogical immortality twice, has been able to do everything that isn't some silly betrayal/trap in SAO. He needs flaws. Being a loner/beater shouldn't allow him to get to level whatever, or maybe he shouldn't have a favorable reputation, any of these kinds of factors should be included. He should be too afraid to anything ever if he cares so much about everyone. SOMETHING. For example, in Fate Zero, Kiritsugu is seemingly unstoppable but at the cost of love ones close to him and his dream was more-or-less dealt a serious blow. Tokiomi was too trusting. Kirei didn't know what motivation to use and let others think for him often. Any competent anime plot makes this second half look like a joke. The second half of SAO needs to be completely scrapped. |

If you think about it in the second half he had one week to save asuna. If he didn't find her in that time she would have been married to sugou and that would have practically killed kirito.

Nice review! imo i think SAO was great! it gave me another anime to watch! music was amazing fighting was cool! yea the story was rushed and had alot of "empty spaces" but overall it was good!
if u read this. If your person who cares about story and almost every detail then idk if should watch this since i see alot of people hatin on it beacuse of these reasons xD!!! but if u just want to watch a cool flashy anime then SAO is allll righttyy for u!!! if not give the novel a try its way more detailed and better than the anime!!! |

So, an experienced player can't avoid traps and know how to defeat things via prior experience? Right *sarcasm intended* I am a gamer and I have learned along the way that x-thing = x-weakness (or x-strategy works against x-thing) or w/e so imo this is moot. Pre-ALO he didn't' have a favorable reputation, to those it was revealed that he was a 'beater' and yeah, you're right someone that fights away inside a 100 floor dungeon and kills countless monsters should never gain experience or levels Kiritsugu was a royal bastard and Tokiomi was far worse than him and got what he deserved imo. Kiritsugu went against servants which isn't supposed to be possible and yet he did (rather easily), not to mention that he had just happened to have an anti-magic gun. Spoiler Alert! Click to show or hide Any competent anime plot makes this second half look like a joke. The second half of SAO needs to be completely scrapped. Or maybe people should learn that they're a small segment of the populous and not everyone can be satisfied. I found second arc to be decent, though not perfect, hence already proving my point. In ending I say: if you don't like the writing, story, characters then feel free to pull up a Wordpad, Microsoft Word, Textpad, or any other writing program and write your own story. Then you try to market that story and see if a) everyone responds well to it and b) if its as 'easy' as you (and all the other 'critics') seem to think it is. |

DomoKevin wrote: Ok I gotta admit, the first 14 episodes of this were great. I loved where it was going. Dying in the game would make you die in real life? Awesome. Can't log out so now you're screaming for mummy and daddy? Awesome. Evil mastermind who just trapped people in this game for the lulz? Awesome. Oh and before you continue reading, I'm gonna warn you that there are spoilers. Even though the whole plot of the first 14 episodes weren't as solid, it was enjoyable to watch how Kirito progressed throughout the 2 years. I couldn't get enough of it. But after episode 15, it didn't feel like I was enjoying the anime as much. Because when Kirito was introduced to a new game, I knew that he could log out, could not die in real life if he dies in the game and that he isn't going to be considered as a beater anymore. We have a creepy new villain who wants to marry and have sex with Miss Asuna-chan in her sleep. Yeah...that is so creepy. And we have some incest going on between Kazuto(Kirito) and his sister. I don't like incest. Putting these flaws all together just didn't make the anime seem enjoyable anymore or even suspenseful. After episode 14 I did not like where it was going or was trying to achieve. I mean, it would be better if they would just keep the same plot. I mean they can do so much from episode 1-25 but just add some badass arcs to it. I love the suspense of a player dying. And Kirito acts really serious every time he see's someone about to die. I mean he has the right to go crazy about it. But now in whatever game he is in right now after episode 14, he still acts freakin serious about dying in the game? Dude take a chill pill, you can respawn back to the nearest town. So what if there are trolls lurking around and killing people for the lulz. Now I think this anime is getting way too cheesy. So yeah. That's how I thought about the anime after episode 14. Not suspenseful anymore. I'm still gonna watch it until it's finished since I'm curious to what happens in the end. But the anime does not seem as enjoyable as it was anymore. It's a real shame. Sorry for the fanboys and fangirls who love this show, but I did not make this thread to intentionally piss you off. I'm just trying to prove a point. Important Note (Edited): After watching further into the series even more, I am proud to announce that Sword Art Online is an extremely crap anime with a horribly written story. Even Twilight takes a huge dump on it. I made a review of SAO recently, so I'll show you how I felt of it. Spoiler Alert! Click to show or hide Sword Art Online is by far one of the worst animes I've seen in a while to the point where I'd rather watch another typical harem genre than this piece of trash. The anime started off pretty strong. I like where it was headed at first. It's about thousands of players who recently bought the game and are playing it right away, only to be trapped in there. If they die in game they die in real life. Only way to log out? Beat the game. Awesome plot! That got me excited. I thought this was going to be the best anime I'm gonna watch. Oh how wrong I was... Story: 2 Like I said, I like where it was headed at first. Mainly for the first 3 episodes. It felt nice and fresh. But then they decided to add some side stories about Kirito-kun (or should I say, Jesus, since he's one of the most over-powered characters in the anime, I'll talk about this in the character section) meeting new players and just being a total badass *sarcasm* when dealing with troublemakers. Right after episode 3, the anime just feel dull, just adding side stories justan excuse to make Kirito look so sugoiii by making all the heroines wanting his nuts. As soon as they begin to romance between Kirito and Asuna, I just wanted to barf. Why? It's because how horribly written and cheesy the dialogue is to the point where I'm just face palming the whole way through the anime. What I really hated was the lack of common sense the writer had. Every moment of this show, you just wanted to yell about how stupid the scenes were. Asuna being able to move to save Kirito? Let's not make her use her sword and use her avatar instead, so she can die so we can feel sorry for her. Asuna had sex with Kirito? Let's just improve her tsundere personality by making her tell him not to peek up her skirt after that. Met a little girl? Let's play family and make her our daughter! Kirito dies? Lets bring him back to life from the power of love! Goddamn this show is stupid... Oh and one more thing which makes this show really bad. Since the writer has no creative ideas cause he/she was hit hard on the head as soon as he/she was born, we were never told why Kayaba was evil enough to trap players in the game. That was by far one of the most stupid villains to ever exist. Oh wait, I forgot. The second villain was more bland, worst and unbearably stupid. Not to mention cliche. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Art: 7 The art of the show was well done. It represents modern day anime art. To be honest, I have a weak spot with anime with good art. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Sound: 10 Yup, that's my only favorite thing of the show. The music is really great and engaging. It gives my ears an orgasm everytime I see a fight scene. It's probably the only thing that keeps me watching the show other than the amusement I get from laughing about how bad the story is. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Characters: 1 By far one of the worst cast ever to be placed in an anime show. Kirito represents a Gary Stu character. What I mean by this is that he is perfect in anything. The writer of the novel wanted us to think he's a total badass and make the female anime fans make him their dream prince. Pfffthahaha! Kirito is a freakin joke. Asuna is a bad female heroine with a brain as big as Homer Simpson's. Her lack of common sense makes me want to claw my eyes out. The crap she says to Kirito is so stupid and cheesy. "If I were let you go and you don't come back...I'll kill myself!" Pfffthahaha, seriously? She doesn't even know this guy in real life and yet she's thinking that he's her everything. The other heroines were just bland and typical harem characters. They all want the protagonist to be their prince and suck his...enough said. One more thing. The villains. There is no good reason to why they are doing "evil" things other than for their satisfaction. Kayaba is retarded. He just traps everyone in the game and gives Kirito a chance to save everyone. "I forgot why I even started doing this." *Ahem* Translation Kayaba, you didn't forget. You just had no reason to do it whatsoever that you're just so embarrassed to admit it. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Enjoyment: 4 Giving 2 points on some of the good fight scenes on this anime. Giving it another point for the first 3 episodes. And giving it one more point for how horrible written this show is that it amuses me greatly. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Overall: 2 This show filled with cliche scenes with idiotic characters. Horribly written and planned. I don't recommend it to my friends at all. Since half of them would hate it to the point where I would be shot to death for recommending it to them. And the other half would suck me off as a reward for recommending them a show which they think is "good". Conclusion? Don't watch this unless you have horrible taste in anime. Oh and a shout out for AHTL for helping people realize that this anime is way too overrated. I actually knew some of this but I actually couldn't be stuffed typing it down. So thanks. Here, have an image that sum up the current arc of SAO quite nicely: Spoiler Alert! Click to show or hide ![]() I'm going to attempt to tackle this, one point at a time because it seems interesting and this is the best argument out of all the SAO haters out there. First your Gary Stu point. Kirito is the #1 player in the whole game. He was recognized by the system and had the fastest reaction time out of all the players which is why he receives the Dual-Wield skill. Prior to Asuna's death during Kirito's fight with Heathcliffe she broke the paralysis she was under to intercept the attack that would originally killed Kirito. This was explained, the system couldn't handle the strong surge of emotion Asuna had for wanting to save Kirito which caused a glitch that cured the paralysis and allowed her to intercept the killing blow. In return, the same thing happened to Kirito. The strong wave of emotion caused the game to glitch and bug out which prevented him from being removed from the game after he had died. As for the fight in ALO, something of this nature in games isn't unheard of at all. For example, take a look at World of Roguecraft. He walks around with absolutely no gear except for a dagger and completely destroys everyone he comes across. Every female character in this show who has been given a name, has fallen in love with Kirito. This is mostly true, although there are a few exceptions. For example the PKer chick at the end of episode 4, and the girl in the murder mystery episode. These are two really bad examples, yet at the same time disproves your point because both these characters have names and both did not fall in love with Kirito. The "Beater/Cheater" haters. Absolutely moronic to a degree that can't even be explained because it was so stupid. I agree with this point completely, although this happens in games today. People want to be the strongest, and hate/blame the people who are better than them even though they are working towards the same goal. Deus Ex Machina. Kirito gets paralysed and just as he is about to die; 'LO AND BEHOLD THERE IS ASUNA! Like this hasn't happened in a lot of anime... Dragon Ball Z comes to mind immediately. How many times has Goku come to save the day? Gary Stu much? Kirito picks the WEAKEST race, gets told illusions are useless, somehow managed to become one of the bosses from the SAO MMO and BITES A PLAYER. People get mistaken about races all the time in MMOs. I used to get a lot of flak being a gnome rogue back in Vanilla WoW, but people didn't think about their small hitboxes/escape artist/dagger proficiency. People don't know what they don't play, information can only take you so far. Kirito beats a highly skilled player in ALO. I'm going to copy paste my response from above. As for the fight in ALO, something of this nature in games isn't unheard of at all. For example, take a look at World of Roguecraft. He walks around with absolutely no gear except for a dagger and completely destroys everyone he comes across. Lets not forget that the creator of this show is trying to pander to every fanservice group there is. I agree with this, but fan service doesn't bother me. There are certain shows where it should be and certain shows where it shouldn't. SAO could have been better without it, but we will never know because it was decided to be put in. Implied incest brother/sister love? Check (I know they are cousins, Kirito doesn't and before it was revealed nobody else did). This is actually false, Kirito knew they were cousins for a long time. He first states it in episode 4, around 13:10. The exact quote is "I called her my little sister, but she's actually my cousin." I like Asuna's parents. Because they are just doing what's best for their daughter! Marrying her off to a man who is twice as old and they don't even know if she approves of it or not! Or if she loves anyone else. After all, family doesn't matter - money does. Oh and a stupid plot. Nice sarcasm there. From what I gather the reason they were going to marry her off to him was because he was the one keeping her alive, had tons of money and would be able to take care of her, and had no idea of his malicious intentions. They were planning to have her married to him a long time before that, but Asuna never told her parents of her dislike of him. Asuna was helpless against pressure. Asuna loves cooking (hurf durf women kitchen sandwich), she is apparently *perfect*, she is submissive towards Kirito almost all the time. That's just how some people are, that's what her character did. There are women in tons of anime that can cook and some that can't. I'll agree that shes very submissive towards Kirito, but there are a few times when she wasn't as well. For example, forcing him to join her party to go grinding together. Honestly though how could you miss the foreshadowing of their relationship at the end of episode 2? The new bad guy in the ALO arc is the blandest shittiest bad guy ever. I'd disagree. He kept 300 people hostage, was going to take away Kirito's girlfriend through marriage, performed experiments on all of them, and much more. There have been worse villains both in video games and anime (of course this is all merely opinion). As for the LN, I haven't read them so I can't really say if they are good or bad. |
