The icing on top of the biggest WTF moments in anime in 2012 goes to the dancing between Kirito and his cousin, which surprisingly for me topped the toothbrush scene from Nisemonogatari.

And I completely agree with you about that scene in Sword Art Online. Well almost since it comes second. The biggest WTF moment is that his cousin tried to set up a dramatic fight between him and her, then as they try to take their final swing she fucking lets go of the sword (because cliches) and gets him to hold her. Actually I can list so many ass-pulls in Sword Art Online that can fill up the whole wikipedia site.

Yeah, it's such a shame 'cause it could have been a great series, and I think that's why a lot of the people thumb it down because the opportunities were presented to them on a silver platter and the writers ended up squandering it.

For the first 14 or so episodes the series was really at its best. I honestly didnt see any problems aside the fact that the only tactic was dash-and-slash. HOWEVER, enough can be said about the second story arc where Kirito enters a new game. I absolutely HATE love triangles that never get resolved. I HATED the cousin mainly because she was never really important to the plot in the first place. The villain was really cliche'd but he served his purpose well enough. what irritated me overall about the second story arc was that the writer included serveral characters that shouldnt be there in the first place. If and when they make the 3rd season, they seriously have to resolve these problems by HOPEFULLY eliminating the cousin and finishing the original villain's story (explaining what the hell he was doing in the first place)

So episode 8 into the series I went to read the light novels and I read all of them that I could. So coming off of that I found this anime enjoyable during the second half mainly because I knew what happened behind the scenes more then they showed in the anime. So no, for me the plot wasn't ruined.
