rice cakes in filipino are called kakanin..
aside from bibingka and suman, there are also puto, ginataan, palitaw (now, i'm getting hungry) and many more..
in the philippines, i think the northern part of luzon is most famous in making delicious kakanin..
i don't know, maybe because it is where majority of the rice are produced, in nueva ecija..
waa i want suman from ilocos! XD~~
i also want to try those from other countries.
do they also taste sweet?

usually, we make it by wrapping it up in bamboo leaves..........makes it tastier! and we either stuff the rice w/ meat or sweet red bean paste................it's really good!

Your threads never cease to amaze me... You have this strange ability to turn mundane discussions into interesting ones.

Glutinous rice is usually a "quick-fix solution" for people who want to make sushi, but just don't have the money to buy the more expensive Japanese rice. The reason is because the gluten content of Japanese rice is higher than most typical asian grains, which makes it optimal for use in Sushi. If you plan on using regular rice (let's say, jasmine), you'll have to mix it with a little glutinous rice to get the "stickiness" you need to make those sushi rolls.

The end product, however, is nothing short of undesirable... the rice is bland and sticky since glutinous rice doesn't give the right consistency of your typical sushi. It ends up tasting like a rice cake than anything else. For the sushi afficionado, it's very easy to detect these "fake" sushi, where glutinous rice was used as a substitute.

The vietnamese ones are tasty, but i'm prob. stereotyping since I'm vietnamese. I like home made ones but the ones made directly from Vietnam taste awsome. Especially the ones sold on street venues.
