It started in award shows, to describe all the free stuff the attendees would get from the sponsors, just for showing up. It's not really meant to refer to anything that's special, even in that context. This term as other people think it means, needs to die. Because people enjoy constantly screwing around with the English language, it's pretty easy to assume someone who says "swag" is referring to the popularized term which is really just another way of saying something's "cool". People constantly creating acronyms for the "word" in an attempt to discourage it's use come off as quite silly to me. Really, even if the "word" has an acronym, how is that an acceptable reason to stop the use of the "word"? I mean, I could create an acronym for "acronym" and it wouldn't make the word any less valuable. Not that you aren't correct, swag can refer to free promotional stuff, it also has other meanings, such as "to sway" and "to stagger". It's context that matters with words, really. When someone says "I got swag" it's easy to assume they mean to compliment themselves. Anyway, I always thought the word "swag" was pretty silly. Such a fun way of calling something "cool", it's just a fun word in general, haha~ I know people screw around with the language constantly, and it adapts and changes accordingly. The acronym I mentioned predates the current usage by quite a few years, and my point that it really doesn't represent anything special (to the celebrities, anyway) was a factor in my response. My issue with it is not as much the use of the term, but the mentality of some of the people who use it. The kids who say things like, "Who needs good grades, when you've got swag?" are the same kids who will probably still be asking in a few years, "Would you like fries with that?" It's this idea that their attitude is going to get them places, and time and again, most (sure a few do, but most won't) of the scene kids don't ever get anywhere. The entitlement aspect of it also bothers me, since it feeds into everything being about them. The world has enough of that self centered attitude in it already; we don't need yet another generation buying into the delusion too. To look at it another way, a quote from my pen and paper RPG days: "Just because you have a character, does not mean you have character." Alternatively, simply saying that you have style, yes, can be a statement that you have a style. It doesn't automatically mean that style is subjectively good. Humility isn't a bad trait to have, and it's a noticeably rarer one these days. I'm actually really sick of people who genuinely believe kids think "who needs grades when you got swag?" or whatever. I have never once heard someone ever say something like that. Even those generic popular kids, who constantly use the term swag. Speaking of, those generic "bad kids" are easily the most successful people I've gotten the chance to meet. Perhaps I'm looking in the wrong place, but in my life I've never seen the people popularized by the internet as being generic, stupid kids who use the term "swag". However, I mostly agree with every other point you gave. |

We can agree to disagree, on that particular point. I won't remotely try to discredit your personal experiences, not that I could. I have encountered quite a few kids like that where I live, even using that "good grades" line verbatim. Overall, they've been quite superficial, mostly one dimensional in terms of personality, and while I hope they'll stop being so self absorbed, I have serious doubts that it will happen for them. Perhaps it's just my own experiences that have made me come to hate the mentality as I do, and there aren't that many things in the world for which I have such disdain.

Last year I was in Jasper with my hockey team for a tournament and they dared me to slip this girl our room number and hotel. She ended up showing up with like 6-7 friends (all female btw) and we ended up going to a local bon fire with them. Sometimes it's that easy.
