I think there are positive things to be said either way. A real photo shows the actual person behind the post, but a "fake" avatar often says something about the personality of the person.

I find fake ones more amusing because I can imagine the person/character in the avatar saying what the person says. They also tend to be more colorful.

I agree with the people that say that a "fake" avatar represents a person's personality more.

It doesn't really matter to me. That said, I certainly respect that some people prefer to be more private in nature, and wouldn't want their picture(s) made easily available online.

Wait... if you can see someone's personality in their "fake" avatar, then I'm some emotionless doll who is a clone of some whiny Japanese boy's mother? And I have replacements? Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaat.

I think it depends on the sight. CR avis tend to make more sense as anime characters and whatnot (at least to me). But I really could care less what people decide to use, I just enjoy switching it up and using different characters I really like or identify with.

So avi is short for avatar. I always knew it as audio video interlaced.
