Either is fine by me. I had been using a real photo of me as Batman, but felt like I needed a change for a bit.

I never really gave it any thought. I looked in the mirror and my avi is definitely not me.

If it's someone I want to message back and forth I would like a real picture. Just so I can imagine who I'm talking to as if it were face to face but otherwise I'm indifferent.

Like everyone's said already the fake avi probably tells more about a person than a real one would. But that one 'picture of yourself' thread that got closed was awesome. It was cool seeing everyone's sexy face.

Hmmm...If the whole personality for fake and real person behind real photo thing was true...

My avi should have been Shikamaru. But alas. I'm too freaking lazy to go to the settings and change it. This is also coming from a guy who finds making instant noodles to be a royal pain in the ass.

Like the rest of the thread said, I don't mind what people use, whatever they're comfortable with. Though yes, it is noted that many people are unsatisfied with their real appearance and thus, with the characters they create or use to represent themselves online, it would be a much more accurate portrayal of how that person sees themselves or wants to be seen. And I think that's the beauty of the net, to be able to build up a profile of yourself that may be hindered by social expectations of you in real life (though not nonexistant online either) or by your appearance that may constrict you from acting how you wish. We also can't help but judge people on their looks, so it may provide solace to people who want to be acknowledged for their personality instead of ignored right away due to how they appear.

Doesn't matter to me.

Though if it is fake I want it to represent them in some way. For example if i see someone with an Ichigo avi I expect them to like Bleach or see him as their personality. Me for example like's Prince of Tennis and likes tennis in general.

I see my mug every day so I don't feel the need to see it in my posts. That and I like to keep a low pro on the net, never know when they will send black helicopters and drones to find us.

I don't mind either way for other people.
Personally, I like switching back and forth from fake to real avi's.

HOWEVER

What I do not like are people who literally get fake avi's - pictures of other people and uploading it/claiming it as their own.
Like seriously, get these fake emo avi's off of CR.. They're annoying.

Haha yeah I suppose that's where I draw the line as well. People who take over the identity of fake characters or real life people, even creepier. It's cool that you don't want to show your face but don't just take someone else's and pretend you are them; that's fucking creepy plus you're not "anime character" no matter how much you look up to them. You absorb information and learn from that character, but you don't literally put yourself in their shoes and say "I'm anime character" outside of cosplay/roleplay.
