While I'm not 100% what the orginal intentions where (besides someone who really like octopus), simply based on the reaction I've seen from SAO, it's there to make the viewer uncomfortable, and shift in their seat. The idea of creepy, slimy tentacles about to violate someone is distrubing. Generally, while guys just get choked out, girls often get the sexual part of it, as it's a common theme to threaten the female with some kind sexual assault, that normally spurs to the viewer to hate the badguy/thing/octopus and root for our heroes to jump into action. Think about all the sci-fi movies with creepy aliens...all that slime and those tentacles...it's repulsive. As such, it works. Then you have people that enjoy that kinda thing.......which I believe is an entire OTHER topic of discussion, not fit for this board.

Definitely, not my cup of tea. Especially, in SAO I felt that it was unnecessary and out of place.

It was actually much creepier looking in the anime than I was able to conjure in my head so eww I guess. TBH though I dont really care about the whole tentacle thing since it seems to be here to stay.
