Harem anime come in different flavors too. The comedy sort, the ecchi sort, the slightly more serious harem/love-triangly things. They each fill there own niche.
Personally, in between the more mature, serious shows that I watch, A nice dose of the lighter-hearted harem anime are a well-needed break. Kind of like a popcorn movie - They're just there to enjoy without having to think too much. You might not enjoy them, but to throw out a blanket statement like what you did, thats what sucks.

I rather just have a moe show like K-on that has a bunch of girls and no guys, cause it just avoids a bunch of bullshit. I don't think tsundre is a harem problem, more of a moe problem. I tend to enjoy some of the moe aspects of these shows. I am watching Idolmaster right now and I am enjoying it, it doesn't have a lot of the standard harem bullshit cause its not really a harem, there is no love and bullshit. The story actually seems like it progressing too. I some how made it through the familiar of zero all 3 seasons... I felt like I could of watched something better than that though, the cliches were very very tiresome. I tried Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai and got through a lot of it but ended up ditching it because it was too focus on cliches and fan service. Harem attracts fan service and fan service attracts lower quality of story and production values most of the time. I blame poor VN adaptions for crappy harem shows, and the fact that low quality shows of these types still seem to sell. I like oreimo and the world only god knows a lot.

I agree with you, I wish they would stop focusing so damn much on these ecchi scenes and ridiculous body proportions and create something that doesn't make me want me to throw up every scene. The characters are just really shallow.

I liked the older harems. Kanon for example. Had all the making of a harem yet clean with a good story line. Some time to much fan service is a bad thing. Or maybe i'm just getting old.

I've disliked harems ever since I watched School Days.

School Days is the oddball of harems. No other harem is like that at all. THAT series is one you shouldn't base your decision of harems on.

School days was great because of the ending XD Plus, I liked how there were no generic scenes where kiss scenes are interupted EVERY SINGLE TIME. And that they choose the protagonist to actually have sex with the girls. I mean a lot of harems should do this. Just because it's an anime doesn't mean the protagonist isn't allowed to have sex. They can. They just gotta not put the sex scene into it but let us audience know that he just had sex. That's it. Like freakin make a scene where they just put their clothes on so we know that they just fucked the shit outta each other.

Thanks Dick, you just ruined my favorite H-game. I just marathoned School Days and holy mindfuck batman.

I think it is more an issue of Harem doesn't stand on it's own very well.

It works well when it is an element of some other kind of story. It works in Tenchi for example because the Harem aspect is simply part of a larger SciFi action adventure story. It works in Kore wa Zombie because it's only a part of a Supernatural Action Comedy. The harem provides an entertaining side show to the main story but it's not the main plot point.

Trying to sustain a show with a Harem as the only real plot point, to my mind, tends to get dull and repetitive. Mainly because in order to maintain the harem you can't have any progress. It's a static unchanging environment, with the possible exception of adding more girls (or guys). Once you recognize that there will never be any progress there isn't much point beyond slapstick comedy.

In some ways that is what makes School Days a bit different. The relationships did progress somewhat. Ok it didn't end well, but there was progress and that is what breaks it from the harem norm.

If he thinks harem is repetitive, I counter with action being worse. Monster of the week anyone? :p

I agree that most ecchi and harem shows are shit, but I do like some.

Such as Oh My Goddess!, and Love Hina. I think they're funny.

True enough Action shows generally are Fight your way up the totem pole until you hit the big bad.

But at least there is a progression there. The hero has to keep pressing forward and ultimately there is a conclusion.

With a Harem you can't have progression. It has to remain static. Once the center actually picks a girl and pursues that relationship the harem has to break apart. In order to maintain the Harem concept you have to prevent any kind of progression in the relationships. Even if the center has a girl he prefers that relationship can't be allowed to progress.

Very few harems actually end. Only rarely have I seen one where the Center actually picks a girl and brings the whole conflict to an end. (though in one case I did see the Center forced to marry his entire harem plus 4 more, which I though was kind of a fun way to end things).

Most of the time a Harem ends with nothing changing. At the end of the series the Male lead still hasn't made a choice and is still surrounded by dozens of girls seeking his attention. The author just kind of stops telling stories about it or leaves things in such a way that he could come back to it some day.

I've never really considered Oh My Goddess a Harem.

There is only 1 girl after the male character and that's Belldandy.

Every other character in the series exists either to push them together or break them up but none of them are actually interested in Keichi.

Urd wants her sister to be happy so she tries to put them together (with ....varying levels of success)
Skuld wants her sister to herself so she tries to break them up
Mara wants the goddesses gone so she attacks them

and so on.

but none of them are after Keichi.

Oh My Goddess is a romance about Belldandy and Keichi. Everything else is the challenges he has to over come for them to be together.
