I've played a lot of VN games both english translated and japanese non-translated ones so probably 50+ VN games,
and i think my favorite by far would be..

Muv-Luv (Extra, Unlimited, Alternative)
I have never been so emotionally drawn into ANY game more than this, its incredibly well written and emotionally dramatic if you play all 3 in sequence. simply UNFORGETTABLE.

then..

Maji de Watashi ni Koi Shinasai! and S.
Great game, art work and story, with comedy and action. Good blend of everything, which is addicting.

then finally..

Clannad
Old school game, but its good, artwork grows on you :]

My favorites of all time:

Galaxy Angel, the first three original games (you know, where you get to date and marry Mint Blancmanche). Wonderful story, very fun game, cute girls, what could possibly be better?

Next. Shuffle! On the Stage. The non adult version of Shuffle! which I bought for PS2 about 5 years ago. Cute girls again, Kaede is wonderful and Primula's story is superb.

Next. Little Witch Parfait. Wonderful game, sort of like Recettear only with a cute little witch instead.

Hourglass of Summer. The first visual novel I ever played. Still a good story, although a bit wonky at times.

Next. Neko Kawaigari. One of the very few adult visual novels I've played. Very sad but very pretty.

Most of the other ones I've played like Tokimeki Memorial and Princess Maker aren't really visual novels.

G-Senjou no Maou is one of my favourites:

Ps.
If you're gonna play it, make sure to wait until the very end of the closing credits after every ending.

I haven't played many visual novels. I've played Jisei and Hakuoki: Demon of the Fleeting Blossom (though haven't finished it yet). I want 999 and its sequel

I don't think I've played any other visual novels... though I could be forgetting something

Um, I haven't played many either.... G-Senjou no Maou is the only one I remember...or ever played? Haven't finished it though.
I'm wondering if Starry☆Sky is counted as a VN? Um, but, by the way...
Does anyone here know Japanese? And is willing to be a translator? There's a group that translates Visual novels but they lack of translators... I asked them to translate Starry☆Sky for me but they can't unless I find some more translators
Can anyone help?

I have not played many. But I'm playing one called Animamundi Dark Alchemist. It has a Gothic setting with Vampires. Seems alright so far. Just in Chapter 3.

I've played Umineko, all of it, and Little busters, I've done parts of clannad, but really if you watched the anime, you don't really need to play the vn imo. LB! and Umineko on the other hand have very poor anime adaptions. I will play rewrite when the patch comes, which will be soon. Also rose guns days I'll check out, only the demo is translated right now. gotta wait a long time for translations most of the time >.<

I don't really play any r-18 ones which is like all of them almost.

heres my list http://vndb.org/u8387/list

Question: where can I even purchase these games? I've always wanted to try one.

Depends on what you're looking for. Let me explain...

* JBox sells a variety of products, including import and translated PC games. All the products available at JBox are worksafe.

* Only a few independent visual novel creators sell their products through services such as Steam or Gamersgate. The majority sell directly to customers. Take some time to browse sites such as winterwolves.com, Sakevisual, Moacube, and Red Panda Games. Try their demos and see what you think.

* There's not many products currently available in English for consoles. You might still be able to find the DS game 999 (Nine Hours Nine Persons Nine Doors), and its sequel Virtue's Last Reward is currently being sold on 3DS and Vita. The PSP visual novel Hakuouki is sold on Amazon and Playstation Store.

Don't forget freeware. The site insani.org stopped updating a few years ago, but it still has an impressive archive of translated free visual novels and a few demos. I strongly reccommend browsing the Altogether section of Insani's site. Also, take a few minutes to look through the Lemma Soft forum, and their archive at renai.us. Finally, you might enjoy Katawa Shoujo.

Allright I'm going to give these places a try. I've always wanted to see what a visual novel was like ever since watching Clannad and a few other animes based off a visual novel. I appreciate it.
