Strike the Blood was one I thought looked good but I dropped halfway through because it is just a stupid harem.

Probably the first Fullmetal Alchemist anime. It had potential to be good, but they just completely ruined the plot, the characters, and pulled things out of nowhere. It's like they were trying to make up new material because they didn't know where the series was going... oh wait. That's exactly what happened.

Other than that, Death Note is probably one of the other series that has disappointed me from the hype it gets. Now, I don't hate Death Note, but while the first season was pretty good, the whole series was almost ruined with the second season.

I think mine would have to be Monogatari 2nd season. After loving Bake and Nise I was so excited for another season, but it ended up just being, for me, a caricature of the rest of the series. Clever word play and artistic animation turned into nonsense dialogue that dragged on for far to long and visual effects that were so overdone they lost all meaning. Went from entertaining to just bashing you over the head with a board labeled "look how artsy we are." It also didn't help that it started out with 6 episodes of the awful, no personality, Tsubasa that I just barely could bring myself to watch.

Also Attack on Titan. I will never get why people love it so much.

11 Eyes. After watching the opening, this show looked just too amazing, and is now my least favorite anime.

Sword Art Online also comes to mind, but only the second season (and a few episodes from the first made me groan.) It definitely wasn't as great, hopefully they will redeem themselves with GGO!

I was excited about watching Pupa since it looked pretty interesting but the episodes were too short for me to bother even watching it :/
I'll probably get hated for this but I had really high expectations for Gurren Lagann and even though its far from my most hated anime, I thought it would be better. Either my expectations were too high or it isn't my type of anime.

Calling this the SAO effect is one of the proof that the internet has a greatly diminished average intelligence and probably less than 0 IQ points. "Dragonball Gt Effect" is a much better name.

I had high hopes for Gt before watching it, when the actual anime was shown before me, I vomited out of my eyes.

"Hated" is such a strong word. While it's true there are such anime I had higher expectations for, there was only one that I ended up well and truly "hating". That is Naruto.
Naruto had an awesome first four episodes. What really cranked up my expectations was Kakashi's "Leaf Village Secret Finger Jutsu", which turned out to be a very aggressive prostate exam. After that, it became boring, lengthy, drawn out, too much dialogue in combat, and plain not funny.
I, for one, think it would be better to phrase this as "anime you had high hopes for but was very disappointing". By disappointing, I mean you ended up not liking or coming close to not liking an anime.
With disappointment as the basis, I can provide several answers.
1. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. I felt the start was pretty low-key. After significant urging from my brother, I kept watching. While I don't think it's anywhere near as good as everyone says it is, I can understand why it is so popular.
2. High School of the Dead. This anime was gratuitous on two things that I want to see regulated and used properly in anime: blood and fanservice. While the premise and characters were great, the blood and fanservice was a major distraction from the plot, and thus, became unenjoyable.
3. Monogatari 2. I'm probably going to get a lot of flak for this one. Compared to the first season (not counting Nisemonogatari), I felt like there was far less puzzle and clever problem solving and more use of vampire power to solve problems. The exception was Hanekawa's arc, simply because Araragi was not there.
4. School Days. A great set up, but a shitty story. I guess this one was another "hated" anime.
5. Okay, time for the ultimate wave of hate from viewers. I just want to be clear, I did not hate this anime: Attack on Titan.
There was so much potential for this anime that was completely wasted. The setting was amazing, there is no doubt about it. In fact, everything about the anime was just a great idea that was poorly executed. Allow me to explain:
a) The way I see it, the maneuver gear thing was not used to the maximum. It makes me wonder if the concept of a snare trap is foreign to the characters. Once a titan trips and falls on its face, it becomes an easy kill. Why did that never occur to anyone?
b) The plot relied too much on cliffhangers. While cliffhangers are great for wanting the viewer to watch the next episode, I felt everything was just too obvious. I was not surprised by anything in the story.
c) Character development. There is no character development to speak of if you look past Jean. Everyone stays the same (though Mikasa has a good reason to not change). They behave the same, they react the same, there intentions are the same, and there reasons for their actions are the same. If that were not the case, they were either killed or eaten. Yawn.
d) This is the most important one. Excessive blood. Blood in anime is like a chocolate chip cookie for a diabetic person. You cannot have too much. When I saw lots of blood, I didn't think "Wow! What an intense battle!". I thought "Ew, that's disgusting" or "That is not physically possible". In other words, it was not healthy for the anime, the same way too many chocolate chip cookies are for someone with diabetes, and, as a diabetic, I have the right to use this analogy. As a diabetic AND someone that works in a kitchen and have cut my fingers a fair few times, I know a thing or two about blood.
If anyone wants to argue with me, do not use "you're wrong about that anime because its awesome". Argue with me by countering my points. If you can't do that, I will ignore you. Don't worry, I like a friendly debate.

Oh yeah, the Hitagi arc was pretty good too. I still liked Hanekawa's arc better.

Sword Art for me, everyone was saying how godlike the anime was, so my expectations were extremely high. Turns out to be one of the shitiest anime I've seen so far.

The Super Sonico anime, it's K-ON plus boobs minus Ritsu which equals K-ON copy.

I'm always WAY BEHIND on the Anime scene, so I pretty much watch every Anime with little or no expectations so I don't make biased opinions based on something I've never seen before. Although--I read a wee bit too much on Madoka Magica so I've been scared away from that one (since it's not my kind of show).
