If we see virtual reality in or lifetime, which is a distinct possibility I may add, we'll see it high power gaming PC's before we do on dedicated gaming consoles.

We certainly will not see anything close to virtual reality on the next Xbox or the PS4. Expect a moderate bump in graphics and system capabilities, bit that's about it. I don't even believe the jump in graphics from PS2/Xbox to PS3/360 will be matched by the leap from Ps3/360 to the new generation. But I've gone off on a tangent. Basically, don't expect true vr anytime soon.

Who cares about xbox anyways. Get a good computer and just hook up a controller to the computer and you basically have a much better xbox.

Don't think that ps4 will be like SAO There's a while to go until we get tot that point. Ps4 will probably be closer to the "Oculos Rift" than that nerve gear we have in SAO. It's because we just don't know enough yet to be able to do these things with the brain, most neuroscientists don't really know from left to right inside of there xD

I don't think we will get something along the lines of SAO's tech, or will last long. Once it gets announced and compared to it, you will have humanitarian groups look into it in depth; find out what happened in SAO and start protesting like crazy. Governments will see the problem with it as well and ban it until something safer gets introduced.

IMO it'll take more than just fully understand how the brain works. We will need to also make sure humanity is ready for it, and not have some douche-bag terrorist group highjacking the tech and taking everyone hostage by locking them in the game with their lives.

Well, you can say that about any game console. It's the price and intuitiveness of consoles that make them much for successful, albeit not as powerful.

True vr will have physics that replicate reality; graphics/computer science is not there yet.

That's a character from a recent video game called Uncharted. As you can see, he looks very close a real person. It's safe to say that graphics today have the look down. But when it comes to physics, we are not there yet. And until we get there, true vr is unattainable.

Is that in game graphics or cut-scene graphics?

Technology evolved a whole lot these past few years. It's pretty impressive. With that, I'm gonna say that VR will be available in our lifetime.

SAO tech is still several generations away, the upcoming tech for the 720 and ps4 is going to be closer to .Hack. Hearing and visual but using a controller.
SAO tech is a long the lines of brain machine interfaces, the stuff being researched for quadriplegics and patients with partial paralysis. Direct interception of the signals the brain sends to move your limbs, to be able to move prosthetic limbs. But SAO takes it a step even further taking over all 5 senses.

720 and PS4 close to .Hack? Yes, but the hardware itself is still garbage comparing the PC. I'm not trying to offend anyone here but next gen console is going to be a disappointment. Although, Oculus rift is coming soon! You can get a neuroheadset(reads brainwaves) today only for $300-600 online.

Yes.. The neuroheadset only reads brain waves, not controls them, which they must do to be able to make something like SAO possible, the closest thing which I have seen compared to the "nerve gear" is either, once there was an experiment which a man got a screen over his face, and a camera was over a dolls body the subject knew that it was a doll, but when the experiment began, the man who was responsible for the test, was pinching, hitting the dolls legs and such, so that the man which had the screen before his eyes, felt "mental" pain, it was not real, but each time the doll was hit, the person reacted. This is probably the closest thing to brain manipulation.
The subject thought it was his body, even though he knew it was a dolls body <.<!

For every year that society advances, the government advances 45 years in technology. We are already have VR. Besides why want something that can lead to slavery? You already have lucid dreaming to create an entire Universe in your mind.
