Shounen as a genre type is defined by its target audience rather than the inherent nature of the shows content. Shounen(boy) means its a manga/anime that is target audience is younger males. Similarly Shoujo(girl) is targeted at young females, Seinen(young man) is targeted at adult males, and Josei(woman) is targeted at adult females. Those are the terms you will hear most frequently thrown around here as genre types.

Shounen tend to be focused on action, although they can be focused on romance or other things as well, but tend not to delve too deep into complicated issues and the good guys almost always win and heroes rarely die. A lot of times the power of willpower/friendship or the like almost takes a tangible form in Shounen. Main characters are often teenage or younger boys.

Shoujo are often focused on feelings, typically romance but other genre types exist within shoujo as well. The main characters are usually teenage or younger females and regardless of story type character interactions and relationships are key. The subjects dealt with tend to be simple though and are often heavily romanticized.

Seinen tends to deal with a lot more mature themes than Shounen. Things are usually not as straightforward as they are in Shounen and protaganists are not always necessarily in the right. Seinen tends not to shy away from stuff that younger males would find girly such as romance, but tends to take things on a much more mature level. Seinen typically has a much greater emphasis on story and character development compared to Shounen.

Josei tend to deal with a lot of the same subject matter as Shoujo, but with the rose colored glasses taken off. Love takes work and doesn't always work out, and everyday life isn't always easy. Relationships are still key but they aren't restricted to highshool crushes and close friends, using relationships such as parent child interactions or professional ones as well.

people offen get confused about genre and themes; story versus plot

protagonist versus main characters versus supporting characters

Posted 12/14/12
Or have the whole idea thrown back in your face. Not everyone wants this interest.
