Definitely both art and entertainment. Any form of expression is art but it also entertains us.

Both.

But to be a fair I consider a lot of things that anime afficiandos look down upon (ie western cartoons) to be art as well. I also consider many movies not just the ones aired at sundance to be art.

The "Anime is Not Cartoons, because cartoons are not Art" crowd needs to get over themselves IMO.

A story that is new and different is art. The zillion knock-offs that follow if it is a hit are just frivolous entertainment. I guess you could put it that way, though everything is new and different to people who just discovered anime.

I saw both. Because Art is among us all humans or what you might called yourself in this state. Without it, we probably just sit in with dull simple matter without anything. Now the Entertainment., it enlighten us with simple fun ideas or creative things comes to mind. So I saying is.. We can do both at the same time.

There is no difference between art and entertainment. Art is entertainment and entertainment is art. Anyone who tries to differentiate between the two is a bit full of themselves.

I think its both. You need a story first, then you get it Drawn out(Manga) which is art. Then It turns into a Anime. Manga and Anime is for entertainment

I want to say "art", but the more I think about it, the more I remember smiling rather than nodding my head in how "artistic" they are. Perhaps it's just because I'm not Japanese, who knows?

Yeah, without a doubt it can be both. By "it can be.." I mean that I wouldn't call every anime a work of art, some are just pure entertainment. Yes! Anime are drawn and most would call it art because of that, but is there really any "soul" in some..if not alot of animation and design in anime? I don't really want to call something art unless it feels like someone really put some thought and effort into the "art".

In some anime design it doesn't feel like anyone is really thinking about how the anime actually looks. Which seems to happen alot since, even though anime has a few different art styles, we seem to see the same styles over and over again which makes me feel like it is being massed produced like in a factory, without much of a personal touch that I feel "art" really needs.

Then again the actual art style of anime isn't all that big of a factor for me. What truly matters to me is the story and characters. If a writer is able to give me a story and characters I can fall in love with, I will be more than willing to consider it art even if its animation isn't all that artistic.

Of course as a final point, I don't find anything wrong if it is just purely entertainment, sometimes I love mindless fun that may or may not rot my brain.

It's both. A good anime should have a good storyline that's entertaining and also good artistic style that makes it pleasing to the eye.
