It's awesome we finally have a Crunchyroll app. When Microsoft announced the list of apps coming to the Xbox, this was by far the best of the list. It's double-important for me now, since I can't watch videos full-screen on my Macbook's retina display screws up video size or subtitles now. I was hoping to be able to just jumpt the Xbox app instead.

Unfortunately, I'm constantly getting buffering problems. Seems like at least once an episode, if not every couple minutes. I did run into that same "Server not available" issue once a couple days ago, but haven't seen it since.

The buffering thing is killing the fun, though. My Xbox is wired (via a powerline adapter) and I don't have streaming issues with video from the Xbox dashboard. I used to have similar issues with Amazon, but those seem to have disappeared when I installed the ethernet powerline adapter.

The signal strength bar indicators never get to HD (even when the video appears to be displayed in HD) and consistently stay at 2-3 bars, even when the buffering is at it's worst.

The quality seems to constantly jump up and down, as well, going in and out of HD even when it's not stopping to buffer.

I had a similar issue with the desktop player where it was constantly buffering, and that was apparently related to Google DNS or something. I tried tweaking my DNS settings on my Xbox a bit, but it didn't seem to have any effect.

So fantastic app (the UI's pretty good, overall), but the buffering issue really needs to be cleaned up.

One other suggestion: it would be nice to be able to get a show page from separate video listings. When viewing my queue, I might want to jump to the info page for the series and select a different episode. Having another button map to "video information" or "show page" or something would be great. This is particularly useful for when my queue is stuck on trailers, for some reason. My "last played" positions for a number of series for wiped at some point during a site redesign, so some of my queue positions aren't entirely accurate.

Sorry if this issue has been discussed, but I was unable to find it anywhere, and I have emailed somebody but no response, but my question is that if I were to only have half of the premium account, would i still be able to use the xbox app or do i need to pay for both?

By "half of the premium account", do you mean only an anime membership or drama membership (vs. the full access membership)?

If that is what you meant, yes, you would be able to use the XBOX app, although obviously if you have an anime membership, you would only be able to watch anime on the XBOX app, and visa versa for the drama membership.

Right just wondering because I'm new here & sorry if this has already been mentioned, but yeah I activated my free trial & I've went onto the Xbox too see what series are on there I only have four series I can watch on there, is that because I am only on a free trial?

Or is it because there is a region lock?

That is because of region licensing. I guess there aren't very many shows licensed in France. Maybe someone else knows if there are alternatives there.

Surprising Considering France gets most of its Anime/Manga before the Rest of Europe & sometimes even America, but hey-ho guess I'll just have to go back too my old ways.

Alright, the 'Crunchyroll Server Unavailable' issue is now literally to the point of making the Xbox 360 app completely useless. Totally unwatchable. The error happens at least several times an episode (across various shows). I do not have ANY issue watching Netflix or doing anything else requiring consistent bandwidth use.

I understand that this isn't an issue that will be solved overnight, and I also understand that the moderator and customer service is pretty thin in terms of resources. But it would be really great to get something a bit more meaty than "we're working on it." Any idea of how? When we can expect an update? Any communication would be greatly appreciated. At this point, the app is just a tile on my dashboard, as attempting to use it just results in frustration.

Thanks.

We've tracked down a hosting-related issue which is likely the root cause behind the frequent quality shifts and the buffer => server unavailable problem.

To be specific, some pieces of the stream are downloading much slower than they should be and the adaptive stream quality is determined based on the download speeds thus causing the quality shifts. Occasionally a file is downloaded so slowly that the player times out and is forced to the 'Crunchyroll Server Unavailable' error screen.

I can say it's being looked into and will hopefully be resolved soon!

Hi, there is a way to change the language settings in the app? Like in the iPad app, cuz in the catalog for example there is 295 videos of Naruto, but in my language have only 25-35 episodes.

Others have mentioned this I think, but the video sometimes randomly skips forward or backward, and the subtitles randomly change font size. I think it has to do with that changing resolution, which is annoying in itself, but I'd rather it change resolution without changing sub size or time position randomly.

I have a very fast internet connection, and have never had a problem with Netflix or the related. I don't run any programs in the background on either of my two computers that are connected, but have been having several issues with the performance on Crunchyroll on my Xbox 360. I am on my Premium trial and want to know if there is a way to fix this and be able to enjoy shows before I continue to purchase this service. I really enjoy the selection, and would love to be able to watch the videos.

When I first started using Crunchyroll on my Xbox 360 I didn't have any issues, and then a few days in it started buffering a lot and sometimes it would go to the "Crunchyroll Server Not Available" page and when I hit "Retry" it would load to the part a few seconds before it cut out and then go back to the "Crunchyroll Server Not Available" page again. Sometimes exiting Crunchyroll and then re-opening it fixed this but then it still buffers.

Today the sound started cutting out for awhile in an episode and it was difficult to get it working again. It would switch between HD and low resolution multiple times which causes it to buffer most of the time. It never sent me to the N/A page, but it did make watching anime kind of non-enjoyable.

I'm just wondering if this is a problem that is fixable on my end, or if you simply don't have sufficient servers for the amount of traffic on this service. If that is the case, will this be solved soon, or will I always have to watch episodes as if I have a crappy internet connection? I really enjoy the service and hope to get this problem solved so I can enjoy it more.

Thank you,
Ren.

EDIT: I just read through the posts above mine, and appreciate the update. Just going to keep watch for more updates. I'll patiently give it a chance to get fixed. (:

I agree that this is a problem and it's a long term goal of ours to at least reduce the effect. You're right that the quality shifting from high-low is the reason for the resolution changes, and when the resolutions change the fonts take up more relative room.

A 48px font, for example, would take up 13% of a 360p stream's vertical height, where comparatively it would take up only 7% of a 720p stream's vertical height.. however smaller fonts on smaller resolutions quickly lose their legibility. We could instead increase the size of the 480p and 720p stream subtitles (and we may in the future) but we have a lot of videos that would need changing.

In the short term, there's bigger fish to fry, but I agree and hopefully it's something we can work on in the long run. Hopefully fixing the frequent quality shifts will alleviate this woe a little bit.

For all but a very few few titles, you can't.

Most of Crunchyroll's titles were acquired as simulcasts, so English dubs simply didn't exist for them when they were obtained. For many, that is still the case. Even for those that have since acquired dubs, the rights to those are held by another company, and would require additional licensing.
