that would NEVER end, which ones would you pick?

i say this because i have had on many occasions, after a 12-24 episode series ends, that even if the next 1000 episodes were mundane, i would still keep watching it.

in no specific order of favorites

clannad - cuz i want to watch ushio grow up :3
chuunibyou demo koi ga shitai - just ended today =[
code geass - just lelouche and VV and how they live the rest of their immortal lives
dragon crisis - DRAGON BABIES lol
- many others i wish i could include into my current top 5 lol-

Now this is on the assumption that the stories would be intact, there would be no need to wait for the manga or other source material , it would just continue naturally without beating a dead horse to keep it going. I'm making 2 lists, one of current & one of past anime:

CURRENT ANIME:
#01 Gintama
#02 Sword Art Online
#03 Magi
#04 Fairy Tail
#05 Hunter x Hunter
Runner up: Blast of Tempest

PAST ANIME:
#01 Patlabor (TV show version)
#02 Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
#03 Blue Exorcist
#04 My Ordinary Life
#05 Accel World
Runner up: SKET Dance

This is a real heart-wrenching choice. Only 5? We can't pick "everything"?

Some of these are still ongoing, but I would pick ( in no particular order )
~ Cowboy Bebop
~ Tri-Gun
~ Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
~ Sword Art Online
~ Cardfight Vanguard

However, as aidenraine rightly points out, one of the things that makes these series we miss so dearly special is how brief our encounter with them is. Single season shows do get re-visited from time to time, like Evangelion for instance!

tl;dl: If you stick with one/ a few anime, you sacrifice all of the other anime after it... and some of those could be better.

Good anime (well ideas) never do end they just become different anime. A end to one anime is the start of another. Ideas from them get carried off into the next, often too much. I remember when Kanon 2006 was the clannad. Everyone seems to over rate newer anime. Also a anime can have worse source material if the anime studio is good. Anime studio really carries a lot of weight. Clannad would of been not very good if it got studio deen or jc staff... Point being is anime goodness and source material are very two separate things. Anime studios generally have a fairly consistent correlation. Clannad, Haruhi, K-on chuunibyou demo koi ga shitai all kyo ani, and all well praised by alot of people. Point is you don't really want more of an anime but more of a studio or writer. And if you have a writer say Key (Air Kanon Clannad LB AB), sooner or later they will get a poor anime adaption. Maybe the story they wrote just didn't convert into a anime well but the source was just as good as the past. So its not like that one was the best. But then sooner or later there will be one that blows the others out of the water.

This. After a while any anime would start to become repetitive whether in the plot or character interactions.

Except for Gintama. Gintama could literally have 500+ episodes and they'd all be consistently funny.

As for my pics:

Gintama
Fairy Tail
Magi
Sket Dance
Katekyo Hitman Reborn

Runners up: Angel Beats, Baka and Test, The World God Only Knows, Korewa Zombie Desuka?, Welcome to the NHK, School Rumble, and Working!!

You get animes which could go on but still have a good ending thats satisfying. Of course you would love to see another season of it but that always has a chance of ruining it. Thats where OVA side story episodes and specials come in. Those are the best type as it doesn't drag along like an 80's rock band that doesn't know how to finish a song.

- Sword Art Online
- Durarara
- Humanity has Declined
- Natsume Yujin-cho
- Accel World
Runners up: Inu X Boku SS and Hayate no Gotoku

These five are the ones I would pick in random order. Animes that keep on going in the hundreds become mundane and slIghtly bland after a while but most people still like to stick to a series once they've started (Naruto, Bleach, One Piece) because thee animes have been goig on for so long that they've simply been incorporated into our childhood. Those massive animes always have many fillers to keep it going. Animes like Fairy Tail and Sket Dance don't need this because the story itself is mad and brilliant enough to incorporate fillers as part of the story.

On the other hand, series like The World God Only Knows , Highschool of the Dead and Bodacious Space Pirates will always need a sequel if it's another season, an OVA or even a movie. People always feel comfortable with a continuous story as I'm sure everyone on this forum has felt the emptiness you get when you finish an anime series.
