Are there any composers out there? If so, what type of music do you write and how do you write it?
Do you use a computer program or do you write it down by hand or record yourself?

I use guitar-pro 5 when I write music for my progressive metalband. I can't play any guitar or piano but my bandmates do so they take my music and interpret it. It works pretty well but I still wish I could write it down without typing it on a computer.

Where do you find the inspiration the most?
I usually come up with ideas in the shower..don't know why but I do =D

Well here's one!

I compose blues, folk and prog-rock now and then, I mostly write lyrics though. I get my very best ideas/inspiration from the daily-life and I usually write them down on a paper or into my mind. I just find a nice chord rotation or a riff and build the song around that .I currently have no band, since my previous band just broke down, however I still find myself writing/composing songs by myself for my own pleasure

I've tried composing on Garage Band since I don't know how to play any instruments, but it wasn't all that special. But I love making my own lyrics. And yeah, most of my ideas come to me when I'm in the shower haha xD If I don't have any inspiration, then I usually make English versions of Kpop songs I like :3

I can't play much piano or guitar either, which is more or less my achilles heel when it comes to writing.

My music writing rig: ProTools 10 + Komplete 8 Ultimate + 003 Rack + a gajillion mics + a couple keyboards, an Akai EWI and some alto and tenor saxophones.

When I was in college, I wrote a TON of music by hand. Mostly jazz arrangements. Since I graduated, I don't write nearly so much as improvise while recording. If I play something I like, I'll pick it out and embellish it.

My genre/style is all over the map these days. I've been writing for indie space sims recently, so it's taken on a darker dramatic-type tone, but it's still choir-based one day, and synth-based the next.

My buddy writes prog metal. I wish I could, I just don't have the brain for that.

I improvise in various scales on the piano. I am trying to make a new genre of classical trance. Where trance repeats addicted themes and classical has a lot more notes to play. I want it to be repetive but also more melodic and experimental. If I could I wish to produce a sheet music book with my own compositions. That would be for solely acoustic purpose only. I also want to start making trance on my computer as the digital part. I don't want to mix those two. I could play piano concerts as one thing and produce trance to upload on youtube as another thing. Some kind of multi musician. I don't know how many people who have mixed the old ways and new ways like this but we are going into a future with lots of new technology and knowledge so really anything can happen!

I write on bass and drums( i am a drummer) and i use the free version of Acid xpress from Sony for sequencing, have dabbled a bit with the free Ableton as well.

The stuff i write is pretty much avant garde, weird, metal, which i use for a my bands. Got a duo with my wife, a solo project and a joke band.

I write songs when I'm feeling overwhelmed by any emotion..... I can never think of a tune for any, even though I play guitar, so I just stuff them in a box and forget about them....

Normally I would get the basic feel and mood going then start humming a melody and accompany it with either guitar or piano.

Do you use a computer program or do you write it down by hand or record yourself?
For reminding I use Sibelius 6 and Logic pro to record

Where do you find the inspiration the most?
Listen to other music and go for a walk

Have a listen to my band: Lost Atlanta

When I was little, I used to write stupid little lyrics, but since I didn't know how to write music, I stopped. Now I'm a Music Education major, and I have to take four different music theory classes, and I'm enjoying them a lot, but now I'm thinking that I'll go into composing wind ensemble music in my off time.

Do you use a computer program or do you write it down by hand or record yourself?
I prefer to write it out by hand, because I like order and knowing that I as well as others can reproduce the sound I had in my head (hopefully).

Where do you find the inspiration the most?
Usually late at night, when I'm really tired, random music floats through my head. It goes by so fast, though, that there's not enough time to catch it before it's gone forever.

I write rap verses and stuff.

Software wise: Steinberg Cubase 5, Ableton Live 9, Propellerheads Reason 4

Hardware wise: Akai MPK49, Rode NT1A, Steinberg CL100 interface, KRK Rokit 5 studio monitors, AKG K120 monitor headphones

Process wise: Lyrics are either handwritten in a near incomprehensible collage (mess) of random lines, blocks of rhymes, words, etc. Or they are typed out on PC. Instrumental samples are randomly selected from a variety of songs from the likes of Explosions in the Sky, Message to Bears, The xx, Phillip Glass, Hans Zimmer, etc. On rare occasions, they may be composed from scratch.

Oddly enough, I have never actually recorded anything as of yet. My lyricism is "supposedly great with lots of potential" but I hate my voice, so I end up ghostwriting a lot. Either that or I participate in cyphers where voice is of no real concern.

Where do you find inspiration the most?
I'm actually almost always writing or thinking of lyrics every waking moment. So anything as trivial as a remark or a comment on a video, or a blog post can trigger a chain reaction of lines.
