Just wondering what skills CR members/Fans have or used in a fight, defense or other reason? Are any Martial Arts needed in this world of ours or do you think it to be barbaric, and better to walk away if you can?

TKD and Arnis
Never had to use them in a fight and I'm insanely thankful for that.

Learning Kung Fu now. I enjoy the balance, fitness and self-control aspects of the arts more than anything, and if walking away is ever not an option then I can at least try to defend myself/my loved ones.

Didn't see the barbaric part of your question. (Yes I'm making a new comment instead of editing my old one.)

I think that the knowledge of a martial art isn't just there for fighting. Sure that's what it was made for but there is another aspect of it. Knowledge of martial arts gives you confidence in yourself and your own abilities. You learn martial arts and know you can handle yourself in a fight. Now you don't have to worry about what happens if that jerk football player tries to punch you in the hallway. That confidence then pools over into other things hopefully and you feel better about yourself. You also have the ability to meditate a bit and the exercise helps to keep you in a more fit condition and thus you have a better mental state for the most part. Plus it also gives you a group of people that you become friends with. That's also an awesome thing to have a group of people constantly trying to help each other out and learn more and more. It's a sweet atmosphere.

Now to get to the actual fighting aspect of martial arts...
You should always try to disengage and walk away before throwing a punch or doing a block. Even if you have to use your skills end it as fast as you can and pull out. But why should you be afraid of getting into fights because you're a martial arts master and you have all of these sweet moves at your finger tips? Simple, because welcome to reality. That big bully or little wanna bee thug could have the exact same knowledge and skills as you do or more. So then it's no longer a fight of a martial artist and some random person, it's two martial artists of unknown level. Even if they don't know any self defense stuff maybe they've been in twenty fist fights already? They know what they're doing while you still have theories. Sure you know how to throw a punch and where to place it and how to position your body but you've never had to throw that punch. I say this meaning that you've most likely only done martial arts in class so it's always been a relaxed atmosphere. You didn't have to worry about possibility doing it wrong. SO train like it's real. Take it to heart and always think that one day whether you live or die lies with how much you've perfected your skills. Those fancy throws and locks that you went over in class that one class every few months or so, don't try them in a real fight ever. because if you forget how to get to your throw/lock then guess what, now you're standing there trying to think about what your body is doing. Say hello to the concrete with your forehead. SO it might not feel flashy or super cool but that block punch kick stuff is what you're going to use. That's why your sensei has you do it every freaking class till you want to tell him you got it down. (Which you don't, they'll find something you're doing wrong)
I'll stop cuz i can rant about my opinions on this forever. But I think i answered the questions i made this to answer.

Muay Thai; I've only had to use it twice in self-defense. First one ended by a straight kick to the abdomen second, elbow strikes to the head.

I'm learning Tien Shan Pai kung fu, and yan style tai chi. Never been in a fight. unless you count friendly brawls and sparring with family and friends, but thats about it. A lot of fun to be learning these and tai chi, though it is satnding meditation, has a lot of harsh moves in it. like arm breaks, and kicks to the groin. and then you have your sticky hands competiotions. very fun...i digress. anyways, yeah these two and only in recent years did i start learning them.

Did karate for two years and mixed it into my own fighting style. Since I've got a very light build I don't have much upper body strength because I had my right bicep slashed in a knife fight and my left arm was broken in 17 places. I've managed to regain a lot of my hand strength so I have a killer grip. I'm very proud of my leg strength and my kicks. I once did a thrusting kick to someone's abdomen and they flew back two meters and landed on their back. @ZenZaku, I totally understand what you mean about the fact that someone can practice for years but not be able to adapt to a real, perhap life-or-death situation, the first serious fight I was in AFTER leaving karate, I got my ass handed to me because I couldn't analyse the situation. My above average intellegence helps a lot now because I've learned to adapt to just about any situation so I can defend myself, then walk away. Another thing about learning a martial art is learning disipline and self-control. If you teach someone how to fight without showing them how to control their anger, they could become an out of control maniac, a danger to anyone around him. I used to be like that myself about six months ago but I was forced to learn how to control myself because I nearly killed my best friend while staying over at his house. Think I've ranted along enough so I'll see you all later.
