I learned Muay Thai for 1 year and a half, stopped for family problems.
I only used it once in a street fight, 2 kids were trying to mug us and it didn't go well for them.... ( I know what you're thinking '' wow you beat a kid'' yeah I did and it was self-defense) he actually had a knife, I didn't know about that. I'm never doing that again,I rather run than fight and get stabbed. |

I've been competing in Brazilian Jiujitsu and MMA for 4 years now. I'm a body-builder too. I don't use BJJ the same way in the cage that I do on the mat. They are two totally different sports. I've done martial arts my whole life, but nothing will prepare you to fight for your life. I've never been in a situation where I had to use MMA style tactics in a deadly fight for my life. A bar fight with a drunk, is not usually a "deadly st33t fight." Usually, if you are in a fight, you wanted to be in a fight. It's hard to fight a guy who is determined to run away. If you have never done martial arts, don't bother with that traditional martial arts garbage, join your high school wrestling team or find a boxing gym. Don't waste your time trying cultivate chi powers on the couch when you should be lifting weights and running miles. Physical fitness is the best form of self-defense. A physically fit opponent with no formal training is much more dangerous than a fat guy with a 3 years of bjj under his gut. This may piss off a bunch of grapplers, but It's happened to me pre-bodybuilding and I've done it to more experienced guys since. Martial arts add to your abilities only if you are already lifting and eating right.

Gaining confidence, believing in your skills, and learning about your weaknesses and overcoming them. I agree. Self-discipline yo'. lol. My parents were my Karate instructors, never got in a fight though, only play-fighting...that's so fun. |

I have 8 months of training in muay thai and brazilian Jiu Jitsu. The only real fight that i got in lasted 2 minutes since the guy gave up and i didn't want to a bully, i didn't use any of my muay thai though the fight when right to the ground.

I did Kokusai Jujutsu Renmei for around 3 years. And it pisses me off to no end when people INSTANTLY assume that it's all ground work. Probably 80% is strikes, and half of the moves either break or dislocate things.
