I have a handle on the basics of karate which have helped me in a few fights in highschool. Basic blocks, form and breathing. Nothing fancy though. I'm confident I could handle any normal schmuck off the street if I need to, but I would stand no chance against a real martial artist.

Shotokan Karate although I would attribute success more to the fact I have a Sensei who has taught us the difference between Martial Arts and real self defense.

i.e. Not getting into a fight in the first place and if that is not possible, how to prepare yourself in a good fighting stance without looking aggressive & how to keep the law on your side for the aftermath

I practice brazilian jiu jitsu and mixed martial arts. It's not for self defence purposes though, it's for the sport.

Ah, martial arts. Never done any, really. I remember dropping a few kids who thought they were Bruce Lee because they were black belts.

I've studied probably close to a dozen different martial arts over the last 30 years or so i will just list the ones i stuck with.

Shotokan Karate obtained a black belt
Tae Kwon Do/judo - Black belt 3rd degree
Isshin-Ryu Karate - Red belt

Current system is:

Shen Luang Hsing-I Ch'uan Kung Fu - Advanced green sash

I've had to use karate in several fights as a child. I grew up in very bad neighborhoods in california, East oakland and Richmonds easter hill.
I've never had to fight for real as an adult as no one really messes with a guy my size :D. Honestly though i'd rather fight someone who studies a martial art other then kung fu to be honest to say its vicious is an understatement as my style targets things like joints, muscle groups, and organs to eliminate an opponent from a fight immediately often these injuries will be permanent if done correctly. Personally i hope i never have to use what i've learned but again i won't hestitate to defend myself either.
