A few years ago I heard about something called LARP (Live action role playing). I watched some videos on it and hated it. I was absolutely disgusted at how cheesy it was. Then I discovered SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism), and I was blown away at how awesome it is.

The fighting is as close as you can get to real 17th century war, without the drag of being killed in the middle of all the fun. What I like about it is that it actually requires skill to do well, and the blows you take are very real too. It's full contact. Think Kendo but with heavier swords and more continuous contact.

So what do you think of SCA? I'll provide a few videos that I think were really cool.

I've been in the SCA before about 9 years ago. I haven't gone to any activities in a long while but I have friends who are still in the SCA. In fact one of my friends was Seneschal for our local branch just last year.

Be the one that starts it. I'm going to look around my city, if not, then I'll try to get it going.

Oh my God.
My mind was blown. It seems nerdy, but in a good way... Like anybody would enjoy it.

If SCA seems like it is hardcore and little too much for you, look into Amtgard, it is more friendlier for those who think they can't handle the "brutality" of SCA. There are some role playing, only if you choose to do it. Role playing isn't a requirement, just an option that is often rewarded if done well. If SCA, and Amtgard seem like it is still too much, look into NERO, that program is heavy on the role play, and very very light on combat.

I know a few guys in SCA who refer people who think think will be better suited to Amtgard, same in NERO, and like wise, some in Amtgard will do the same for both groups, because in the end, if the program suits you, you will have fun. Which is the most important thing, is if you're having fun. Plus you tend to stick around longer if you go to a matching program.

If you ever get somebody who bashes another program, and they are dead serious about it, ignore their advice, as they have no proper experience of them to make such accusations.
