accel world is somewhat similar. and you can ignore the other series in the .hack// franchise. //SIGN and //LIMINALITY were the only good ones I saw. I haven't seen the //QUANTUM ones yet, though. they're on my "to watch" list.

I enjoyed Quantum. It was definitely better than Roots, imo.
Accel World is set in the same world as SAO, but something like 50 years in the future. The neural links are a natural evolution of the tech you've seen in SAO.

You should try look for animes with the genre "Game". Most of them are at least a little alike SAO and .hack.

If you're looking for series that has gaming and virtual reality elements, other than what has already been mentioned including Btooom, Accel World, .hack series and SAO, there's also Ixion Saga DT which is currently airing.
There's also the Hunter X Hunter: Greed Island OVA, which happens to be the current arc of the new remake of HxH. Although this is just an arc of the whole series.
EDIT: There's also Log Horizon, which has just been announced.

I would have said all of the ones already mentioned if you are looking for that specific genre. I am just gonna go ahead and list a few that wouldn't be considered of the same genre (aka not based in a game world) but that I think you might like anyways:
Angel Beats
Chrome Shelled Regios
Kaiba
Sorry if I am off the mark in my guesses here but those three shows share a lot of the same themes as SAO even though they aren't set in a video game world.

Thats a Horrible series......the premise for .hack//roots and G.U. was reflecting on one guy......the best series is the original ones.
