Anime and Girls
|
Lol topic of this thread so true T_T...basically all the girls at my university are either cowgirls or barbie dolls...It's gonna be a long next 3 years. (I used to have no problem with that because when I was in high school I was a jock...but I changed a lot over summer xD)

A "Hopeless Romantic" that has discovered romance is hopeless.

That is so sad, everybody at my school at least knows what anime is, even the teachers.

Sometimes I just want to dug my own hole to hide in.

Even [some] girls in Japan dislike it. I think it might be because the lack of sufficient knowledge on the subject in your country. It might also be because you are talking to girls in a difficult phase of life who are only interested in "fitting in" and love and fads/popularity, and blah. There is, actually a slight chance that the girl is a "closet Otaku", or maybe feels the same way about guys. It could be that people in these countries prefer live-action to animation, feeling that they are just for children. It could be the the stereotype for anime- either perverted or directed for guys. Do the guys around you also like anime? Maybe, just maybe- the girls you talk to just don't like you (which is my problem), or they already know someone with an anime obsession and it drives them nuts. There are actually many different variables affecting this, but I have to say- I think the main reason is because anime is not that big in your general area, so they cannot distinguish anime to cartoons, and may not even know much about it- or the wrong things. There are those girls who enjoy "mainstream" anime, and there are those who don't like the general personalities of those who do. It all depends on the person.

I'm a girl and I obviously love anime. OwO Also, back in High School and college most of my friends were 1: Girls, 2: into anime/manga. Maybe all the girls in your area that like anime are hiding out in their homes, watching CR.

Hmm, i think it's all about how you approach the situation. As many people here have stated, there is chances that it's from the stereotypes, to even pretending that don't know cause others may find them weird. I know when i meet girls who like anime, they generally are the ones asking me i like it or not, then they ask me to watch some things. though other times i ask them if they do, and if they don't and mention something about the stereotype, i merely explain to them kindly, that if they like movies, and have a movie genre they like, then they probably will find something in anime they like.
It's a touchy topic for some people though, as another stereotype (which was mentioned before) is that it's only for children. So they may think "oh you watch that kid stuff?" or other thoughts, Which again with the right explanation, they generally will see your point of view and may secretly watch it then you can make them slip up by mentioning something from anime from time to time. As, they will more likely then not watch what is available to them, unless they go searching for it. Then as another person mentioned, there is the problem of if they like your or not/ Find you interesting or not. Which can also play a role to how they see you. Though in the end, the majority of teens are going to be more interested in things that catch their eye, and the next media hit. (not all girls or women are likes this.) So really it comes down to how you play your cards at the start of the game sort of speak. Hell i know a girl who watches Berserk, that was the first thing that seemed to come to her mind when i asked her about anime haha that was back in high school mind you. |

I admit lately I have been neglecting to watch anime, especially since I'm stuck with university and internship- but I still am a geek-at-heart when it comes to anime, and I'm not ashamed of it haha. I guess when you're passionate with what you like, and polite enough not to judge anyone, everyone will come to like you a lot too. Girls shouldn't fear being called a geek just because they happen to like anime.
It would be nice to be true to oneself, and be nice to others- we would less likely be stereotyped and judged. |

Okay I admit, I still get squeamish around a lot of blood.

Anime is incredibly common among girls where I live. Probably even more common than among guys.

You are 100% right we need to destroy this stereotype when it comes to Anime and Manga. To me both are great and they need to have their place as great story telling tools. |
