The other was like...Mia. ._. I just thought it was funny. I'm calling a fourth character named Mia right now.

I have seen no news of a third series being green-lit, but the DVD/BD sales were certainly were good enough. It should be noted 6 months elapsed between end of the first series and the beginning of the second. The same gap would point to spring 2013 for a third series, but apparently the second series was announced about 4 months before it aired.

It is very likely being handled by Aniplex. If you check many of their titles (i.e., Fate/Zero) on CR, you'll see that most that were simulcast were delayed by one week, while others only appeared as library titles well after broadcast in Japan. Nekomonogatari was also a bit of an odd bird, in that first it was more like an aired OVA than a series (only 4 episodes), and all were aired in Japan back-to-back in a single 2 hour block. Also, contract negotiation costs are relatively fixed, so that makes them relatively more expensive to acquire than a 12-26 episode series.
