As many of you know, the Japanese population of 128 million is shrinking and will be down to eighty-five million by 2050 with nearly forty percent of the population being over the age of 65. This is a very serious problem for Japan. Do any of you see and end to this downward spiral? Unfortunately the Japanese seem pretty apathetic towards it.

Just doing exactly what all countries should be. The world simply isnt designed to cope with this many humans. Either we need to change our ways or reduce how many of us there is.

Discounting immigration, the same thing is happening in most European countries.

Economically stable countries also tend to have stabler populations. (AKA: poor people like to **** and not use protection).

My Japanese teacher once told me that the reason for the depopulation is that more and more women are trying to focus on their career in japan. I'm not saying that women shouldn't work or anything. What I mean is that this generation in japan is more career focused that the last ones. Hence they do not have time to go build a family. And as Bakzack said, there are also alot of poor people in japan who just can not afford to build a family.

The bigger problem here isn't the population in general shrinking, but the YOUNG population getting older without a new youth to take it's place. An old filled country with little working-age population to sustain it will crumble into economic crisis.

I've watched a documentary on that in Living Environment class once, mentioned the same thing. It's rather depressing to hear, especially since I actually want to visit the country some day. :/

MAYBE they will have to depend on immigrant workforce, so that may be an opportunity for us to visit them and work for a while.

Yeah so all of the immigrants can destroy Japan, good idea !
It won't come to that, Japan will find a better solution.
