I think the other reason why there are so many people that either love or hate SAO is the way the show played out.

The First season was excellent.
The Second season was mediocre.

For many, the first season was excellent (I thought this as well). Because of this, I think the first season built some unreasonable expectations in viewers who hadn't read the source material and didn't know what the next arc was like. I knew what was coming up, so I got my rubber suit on.

I was willing to overlook the egregious scripting problems of the first season because I loved the action, plot, villain, atmosphere, the sub-characters, and most especially, the two main characters. Their chemistry as a couple and as fighters is awesome. So much of the first season was well done and engaging.

For many, the second season just didn't live up to what came before. The second season lost much of its unique tension and concept. What came next felt cliche and old, and, quite frankly, boring. It was a real grind to get through each episode of the second season. The cute ears kept me going.

I liked the last episode of the Second season. I might be in the minority on that, but I felt they did a decent job tying it together. As I wrote in my previous post, it's a fun, interesting show with quite possibly one of the best anime couples to grace the screen in a long time, but it fails to capitalize on its unique momentum and ultimately falls into well worn, uninteresting and horribly boring cliches.

I loved the anime, but it does have it's faults. I felt that the first Arc was really rushed to try and cram as much as possible to fit the 25 episode limit they had set for themselves. I would have liked if they took a bit longer with the first arc to flesh out the characters. Although since the novels (from what I heard, haven't had the chance to read them yet) were from Kirito's viewpoint, I guess it would be hard to do in some cases, being limited to the amount of time that he had spent with them.

For me I guess it was easy to relate to since I've been a gamer for as long as I can remember and have been playing MMO's for quite some time now as well, so in a sense it was like seeing what living in an MMO would actually be like, with the hardcore crowd, to the casuals, and right on down to the trolls being represented in the anime.

To each their own people can like/dislike the anime, but personally to me it doesn't matter, because I got a lot of enjoyment out of watching this anime.

You want me to point out some good points of why this show is so bad? Ok then.

Kirito is a Gary Stu character. A character that is perfect at anything. A little annoying wannabe emo who is a solo player and is a beater of the game. It shows no flaws of him. He is over-powered in every way. He's the only one that can duel wield swords. He beats one of the hardest monsters by himself. He beats the admin by himself. In the second arc, he beats the strongest player with crappy gear while his opponent has extremely good and powerful ones.

What I also hate about this show is how horribly written it was. How horribly the story was done. The plot was fine. It's just the story, what happens in it! Ok first 3 episodes were good. The romance between Kirito and Asuna is so irritating to watch. Asuna is obviously one of those annoying tsunderes just so the fatass otakus can moan to her. Kirito just lets her abuse him. They partied for a while, then they fall in love with each other after that. Probably Asuna realizes how overpowered he is that she decides to marry him. Then they decide to have cyber sex (yes, it is not real sex since it's in a freakin' game! ) and Kirito asked her to marry him. Oh but that's not all...

Yui shows up and suddenly calls Kirito and Asuna "mama" and "papa" which makes no sense. It doesn't even give us a reason why she's calling them that. She says she has always been watching them, that she is so interested to the point that she wants to make them her parents. What a joke. Oh and by the way, Yui is just a program, and you know what that means. She has no self-awareness. Which means she's just a robot who acts like a little kid, but what's going inside her mind is blank. She's a nothing. This mama and papa crap makes no damn sense. Oh but that's not all...

The dialogue between our lovey dovey couple is so horrible! Hahaha. "If I were to let you go...and you ended up not coming back...I'll kill myself." Pffffthahahahaha! Wow are you serious? She doesn't even know the guy in real life and yet she reckons he is her everything. I like how Kirito tells Kayaba to not let Asuna kill herself. Hahaha...oh god this show is so bad it's hilarious. Oh yeah. Since this is a game, how the hell did Asuna break out of her paralysis to save Kirito? I don't reckon your will and emotion helps since it's a game and it cannot read it. Oh and if she broke out from her paralysis, since she's considered as "lightning flash Asuna" she would have been able to draw her sword out by now to block the attack. Instead she takes it like a slut she is, dying in front of Kirito so he can have a little boohoo about it.

Wow Kirito is just so sugoiiii, he even screws with the game by coming back to life after Kayaba killed him. No he did not use a revive potion he got in earlier episodes, he gave it so his gay friend. Oh I forgot, Kirito is Jesus. No wonder he was able to come back to life and kill Kayaba. SUUUUGOIIIII.......not. That part was stupid as hell.

What I really hate about this anime, that it has one of the most stupid villains out there. It seems as if Kayaba's only reason to trap players in the game was for his own amusement after all. Or probably the writer didn't even think it through first and decides to leave it like that since he/she has nothing creative to think about.

I'm only talking about 30% of how horribly written this anime, and I'm not half way through yet!

Fan service in this anime is guaranteed, guys. We get introduced to panty shots, tsunderes, token lolis, big breasted sluts and more. This is for the sake for perverts to focus on the sexuality than how badly written this show is.

Oh and the second arc is so horrible, even Superbabies: Baby Geniuses 2 takes a huge dump on it when it comes to plot and entertainment.

I can list down so many reasons why this show is so damn horrible. But then I'd just be wasting a whole year of my life just trying to write it all down.

I gave the anime a 5 when I had watched the first arc. The worst I can say now is that I would give it a 4 because episodes 16-21 were a little weak.

The things people are saying on here to the negative have been so incredibly melodramatic that I have a hard time taking any SAO criticism on the site seriously at all. The few people who have been on these forums ranting and raving for weeks say that they're trying to combat the rampant fanboyism that plagues this series. Well I think that the rampant hateboys are the worse culprits in terms of destroying the possiblity of any sort of intelligent discourse *looks up*.

I enjoyed it and I've been watching anime for years. in fact i find myself to be more of a critic, but this series never failed to keep me interested. While I admit there are cliches (but what anime is entirely void of cliches?) there was something about it that kept me intrigued. Lets look at the positives:

1. Well written, though archetypical, plot
2. Great music
3. Great animation
4. Likable characters
5. Well done character development
6. Enjoyable genre

Negatives:

1. Haters

Hope this helps.

For every anime, there are always people who will like it or hate it.
But as the show gets more and more popular, the voices of the fans gets more an more intense.
Me, I like SAO and every other arc it has because I enjoy seeing a protagonist do what a protagonist should.

Considering how often they re-used the two main battle themes (the standard epic one and the semi operatic boss fight one that was a prelude to the normal one). As well as the sad introspective melody they always showed in flashbacks, I never got sick of them. In fact I re-watch certain battles all the time more for the badass music than anything else.

I think it'll be the first anime sound track that I will legitimately buy just so I can have the disc.

Ehh, I disagree with you on the bold points; I found the main characters to be terribly developed and they were unlikable for me but the side cast were far more interesting and enjoyable.

For you negatives, that could be quite offensive to some people; I hate SAO but I try to provide constructive feedback on the show and reason why I dislike it. I find it very annoying that there are certain fanboys out there who dismiss legitimate criticisms and attack those who provide "negative" feedback on SAO.

I have to say, after I finished reading Mother's Rosario today, I hope they continue the anime just so I can see that story animated. although the ending made me baww a little.

I really love SAO for the anime, Alfheim Online is ok to me.

i wonder why you hate that anime so much, just because Kirito is a Gary Sue?

i know everyone hates Mary Sue/Gary Sue because it is a fictional character that ruined the story.

Sorry about that part. Half way through my response I got lazy and stopped putting forth effort and just tried to summarize everything with one word. Sorry again if that offended you.

I read your post with the problems you have with SAO and kerrytoe, and i respectfully disagree (and i'm not going to argue or try to refute your points). I will recognize that both asuna and kirito are very archetypical, but I also find no problems with *certain* archetypical characters. For instance, I HATE most tsundere characters, unless they're done just right (Taiga - Toradora!). And while i'm on that topic I hate ALL sister complexes, so I was actually glad when Sugu got her world crushed at the end of season 2 and I was all like "HA! serves you right for being a NOOB!". Anyways stuff like this is a matter of opinion, and I really liked all the characters, cliche or not.

:)

We should be friends though.

Honestly. I'd love to watch a compilation of all the battle scenes. Oh and I shall be purchasing the OST ASAP FTW.

Also speaking of animes that I bought just for the soundtrack: Clannad. Season 2 Intro always brings tears to my eyes... Awkward when I'm walking around campus.

After completing the anime I still feel it was an enjoyable experience. I understand some of the critique but it didn't ruin the experience for me. Art is subjective. A lot of people enjoyed it and a lot of people didn't.

For me the show wasn't hyped so much by the fans but those first few episodes. Really episode 3 was legendary. And then after that we get episodes of crap that felt like filler glossed over with some okay battle scenes.
And it isn't just that I wanted a really sad or hard hitting story from SAO but that we got a boring romance between Kirito (a boring character) Asuna (a disapointing character) with their annoying moe blob of a daughter Yui. Then throw incest and it kinda just makes me wonder why the fuck am I watching this.
It lost focus and just fell flat.
