It is a harem anime of the worst kind.

Every female character in the series acts tsundere to the main character, only to later warm up and want him so bad. Every, single, one.

The lead character is able to overcome anything with deus ex style powering up in the middle of a fight. He just so happens to have a skill only HE can have in the game. He has super huge stats that explains why as a low level character he can wipe the floor with high level pvp players...just don't let the admins find out

That alone makes me not enjoy it.

I find it interesting that everyone fawns over the first arc and hates on the second arc because I feel the opposite about the 2 arcs.

I feel the first arc is rushed to hell and to top it off episodes 3-7ish are absolutely pointless, so why not eliminate these episodes and flesh out the arc? Oh right, because fanboys would be pissed off that their favorite side arc wasn't show. An adaptation should stand alone on it's own, not needlessly preview random stories to appease fanboys.

I felt the second arc paced itself much better and from what I gathered from friends who have read the light novel it skipped 1 or 2 side quests, which allowed it to pace the main story arc and not just rush it. I also found Suguha/Leafa to be the better girl. Sure it was incest happy, but I felt she was a more fleshed out character. Also...I'm COMPLETELY BIAS TOWARDS ANY CHARACTER VOICED BY AYANA TAKETATSU!!! 8D

To be honest, I think that it really appeals to a lot of gamers because we recognize a lot of the things that happen and can relate to it. I also think it presents such a unique experience... it's not like most 'trapped in a video game' things where it's just one person or it's a short term thing where they just have to quickly win and they're done; it creates an element that is more a 'life game' than a 'death game' and that makes it very very interesting to think about.

For me, also, Kirito is very relatable. I see a lot of myself in him, and that makes it really really interesting for me. The other characters all have interesting personalities as well, but I really do recognize a lot of myself in Kirito.

I wrote some stuff about the first/second arcs of SAO on my website if you want to go a bit more indepth into what I thought about it:

I do agree that he overcomes stuff randomly, but he wasn't low level he was one of the highest level players in the game. From what I understand Heathcliff was the only one with a higher level.

Also, in general I enjoyed the series it wasn't amazing but I really liked it. I hope they continue the anime by following the light novels more.

Heathcliff was the game designer right?

So this guy, a solo player, was grinding levels that most groups had trouble doing...was able to unleash special attacks that shocked everyone around him, and made all the female players in the game want him..

No this was a horrible story and horrible anime. It was poor in every aspect. Plus the character did not develop at all, he went from nerdy grindy solo guy, to nerdy grindy solo guy with a girlfriend...that was the extent of the entire story.

I, myself, am a gamer but not for a second could I relate to anything the anime try to show. If one were to relate to gaming look at BTOOOM! for a better description.

For me gaming is about trying to achieve something with hard work and through sweat, tears and a lot of frustration you gain an understanding on a way to beat this NPC/monster/boss/opponent or trying different strategies when you can't finish a certain level. This show didn't do any of that. It basically just showed you what everyone wishes to be in a game... and that's being good right from the start without learning anything and no struggle.

In my opinion that's a boring game when it doesn't offer you a challenge.

Yeah I said something unpopular, I MUST be trolling right?

Care to show examples of Naruto gaining abilities mid fight without revealing he had to train and study and work at the abilities he has?

Dude, I'm a hardcore naruto fan and I can admit naruto has the "instawin" and "alwaysovercome" formula down to a T. Come on.... COME ON brawh!

Edit: The entire first part of the show was just naruto gaining more tails He always just went fox mode whenever doom was near. A lot of the characters developed that way, even sasuke. I love naruto but if you honestly think Naruto is something special over SAO, it's only because as fans we get so emotionally invested in a show that runs as long as naruto. SAO was hardly harem, over the course of 2 years having a few girls interested in you isn't a giant leap. I'm not saying SAO is better than Naruto, I'm just saying you're taking this discussion a little personally while not allowing others to have their guilty pleasures. Like it or not, Naruto, which I love, is a pretty giant hot mess. We watch anime for its cliches and for the moments we treasure. Some people really enjoyed SAO, why argue so hard for a subjective opinion? It isn't as if anyone is forcing you to watch the show. I wasn't forced to watch the show. I wasn't forced to watch any anime, the ones I liked or didn't like. And if someone likes an anime I don't like, GREAT! I'm glad they found enjoyment out of that piece of art.

Calmness, Peace, Zen ~_~

WWND? What would naruto do? I think naruto would probably let other people enjoy their hobbies as long as it didn't hurt other people.

hardly unpopular.. splashing the haterade around on SAO seems to be the most popular thing to do on this forum right now.

and naruto's always pulling victory out of his ass. it's pretty much an unwritten law that pretty much everyone in that show has some omgsupermove up their sleeve when they need it, which is one of the reasons why I dropped that show years ago.

also, kirito doesn't just acquire his abilities miraculously mid-fight, either. he had 2 years of time logged into SAO, often foregoing sleep, food, and other necessities in order to train his abilities to clear the game. not to mention his impressive power in ALO had nothing to do with his character getting transferred over from SAO, since levels and stats weren't used in ALO. the only thing that was really carried over were his skill levels. everything else was his own power.

That's what happens when something new surfaces to the scene and gains popularity ;)

Soon enough it'll be in the same position Naruto(or any other old popular series) is in and a new thing will take it's spot... and thus continues teh chain of hatred and whatnot.

SAO gives the validation of playing video games.

I didn't just lose a day in real life, I gained one within the video game. Even though the games I play are not VR, I still have no regrets of playing 12+ hours a day on WoW during my teenage years.

Aside from that, I think SAO is completely overrated.

IMO <---- I though that it was a solid idea, and that the show was a refreshing change in pace from most anime out there. And there was character development, but it was more in the emotional aspects. I think he reason that he had a one of skill was due in part to his emotional attachment to the gaming world.

Now I'm not saying its a Ghost In The Shell but it was a solid show.

That is wonderful and all, but the thread is "why do people love/hate SOA" so I told my reason as to why I hate it.

As far as naruto and his powers, that was from the very start, it was revealed in the first episode he had that power in him. It was not "LOL IN TROUBLE, PS I GOT DUEL WIELDING AND IT DOES INSANE DAMAGE YOU JELLY OTHER PLAYERS, YEAH, YOU ARE"

I don't care to discuss naruto, I would gladly due it, but would rather do that in naruto threads, it is simply not the same thing as SOA. Naruto trains, naruto fails, naruto was disliked and turned down by every female besides hinata, naruto learns that he needs others to be truely strong.

Sword art online is just "Loner gains powers off screen, needs no one, and every girl drops panties at the sight of him"

As I said, its my opinion, and in said opinion, is it horrible harem anime shlock masked in an mmo adventure.
