Why Do people hate SAO why do people love it?

I'm beginning to wonder if you've ever actually seen a harem anime before.

I don't hate Sword Art: Online, I just dislike it.
When I saw the first episode I thought to myself "Oh great, a .//hack sign rip off". After the first season was done a lot of people were expressing their love for the series in forums, and I thought I should try it out. Spoiler Alert! Click to show or hide After watching the first season it seemed really mediocre to me. The MMO aspect was downplayed and it seemed like the creators never played one before with the way they were giving Kirito stats, and skills. Most of the characters were boring, and Asuna and Kirito playing house with a make believe daughter was creepy. I watched a bit of season two, and the cousin being in love with Kirito was even more creepy. Sure, they might be cousins or whatever (I don't remember much of it), but the fact is that they grew up together in the same house, so they might as well be brothers and sisters. I feel that it had potential, but if they didn't follow the source material it might have been much better, due to the source material being crap (in my eyes). |

It's a basic anime...Nothing ground breaking...but I enjoy it.

Kirito is a Gary Stu character. A character that is perfect at anything. A little annoying wannabe emo who is a solo player and is a beater of the game. It shows no flaws of him. He is over-powered in every way. He's the only one that can duel wield swords. He beats one of the hardest monsters by himself. He beats the admin by himself. In the second arc, he beats the strongest player with crappy gear while his opponent has extremely good and powerful ones. I've said it before and I'll say it again that this is not true. Its one of the many things people like to toss around as fact when its just their opinion. He has flaws, he has been shown to be not over-powered (and even if he were in the post-15 eps its cause he was a hacked avatar), and he's the first one to meet the requirements for dual-wielding not that its soley limited to him. Spoiler Alert! Click to show or hide Fan service in this anime is guaranteed, guys. We get introduced to panty shots, tsunderes, token lolis, big breasted sluts and more. This is for the sake for perverts to focus on the sexuality than how badly written this show is. This made me laugh as I've seen more 'fan-service' in KHR than in SAO. Spoiler Alert! Click to show or hide Chochobot wrote: I, myself, am a gamer but not for a second could I relate to anything the anime try to show. If one were to relate to gaming look at BTOOOM! for a better description. For me gaming is about trying to achieve something with hard work and through sweat, tears and a lot of frustration you gain an understanding on a way to beat this NPC/monster/boss/opponent or trying different strategies when you can't finish a certain level. This show didn't do any of that. It basically just showed you what everyone wishes to be in a game... and that's being good right from the start without learning anything and no struggle. In my opinion that's a boring game when it doesn't offer you a challenge. That's your experience in gaming mine is different. I play my MMO to talk to friends & clanmates rather than to 'achieve' anything. And Kirito did have to learn as he fought his way up in the Aincrad arc. Spoiler Alert! I find it very annoying that there are certain fanboys out there who dismiss legitimate criticisms and attack those who provide "negative" feedback on SAO. Except 3/4ths of the people I've seen responding to it with the 'critic' mask don't take the effort to say that its just their opinion. And the anti-SAO people are just as bad as the pro-SAO people so the only ones that get screwed are the possible fans of SAO. Now on to topic at hand, I like SAO cause I enjoy the story and how it progresses through time. To me the characters are relate-able and I want to see what happens to them. The first season had more drama-action and the second season drama-romance imo one of the reasons people whine about it is that they were expecting an action show. I refuse to fall into the status of being a 'critic' so I won't say anything about disliking this or that. Ultimately I'd say to watch the series and if you like it, you like it and if not, then you don't but just do everyone a favor by not donning the mask of a so called 'critic'. |

The only trouble I had with it was that they couldn't die in the second game, I thought that was pretty lame. So everything cool that happened I would just think "thats nice but, he could just go eat dinner and come back try again" but I guess the driving force was that he couldn't wait any longer than he had to to rescue asuna.
some of the fights were amazing, the soundtrack kicked butt! I can't think of a single character who annoyed me, I can think of a few that might annoy other people but they all seemed fine to me. and for some reason i just really like kirito and asuna. I always say to stay away from romance unless you can actually use it for the story and use it right, and I think they did a good job of using it. It added a lot to the show. |

I personally loved SAO at the beginning; the execution of the 1st few episodes was superb. The anime had great, and I mean great potential from there, I just loved how they introduced each of the characters, be they support or main chars. The few episodes after that were not nearly as good, but I was still hooked at the time anyway (watched season 1 in one straight night).
What was bad about the anime though (to me anyway) was; - The numerous plotholes and extreme timeskips that did not keep true to the original LN (which was frustrating because I would have loved to see the side-characters backstories explored more slowly and thoroughly) - As an example, one of the episodes (episode 14 I believe) was rather poorly executed; it felt extremely rushed. To further elaborate: (SPOILERS FOR THE INNOCENT) Spoiler Alert! Click to show or hide The way it progressed felt wayyyyy off. Seriously. Kirito just randomly goes "oh, this (leader of the Blood Knights or whatever the fuck they're called) isn't hurt, he's clearly not like us" and Kayaba's all "Oh shit you found me out, congrats. I'm the f******* final boss you were gonna fight betch, now I'll just randomly offer you a chance to end the game and save everyone". Pretty friggin' anti-climatic, amirite? - also LOL at the girls who only get one episode each in season 1 (other than that pink haired merc who appeared in another episode as a minor cameo, don't remember what for) What I did love about the series though; - the irresistibly adorably horribly horrendously cute couple that is Kirito and Asuna. God. I loved their little antics/rituals together later in season one. The way their characters developed prior to that when they were together as comrades before was just as good as well; this helped alot as this relationship developed throughout the series. In my opinion, one of the best romantic anime couples I ever came across. - The majority of the fight scenes. THE FIGHT SCENES BRO. So intense and adrenaline pounding. I loooooved watching those while experiencing what emotions the combatants felt as they were fighting at the same time. And I know this was based in an MMO, but I still say the HP gauges are a nice aesthetic touch. o/ So, yeah. I guess that just about sums up everything I feel about this particular anime. :] |
