I've never met a person who thinks he/she is better than me. If anything, people keep thinking I'm a walking calculator because I'm Asian and I wear glasses.

(Someone also jokingly said that I look like someone who is a member of the High School Chess club -___-;;)

I'm more of linguistic person than a number person... words make more sense to me than numbers, I hate maths.

I like debating with people, but if someone is being arrogant, condescending or obnoxious I'll usually just disengage and walk away. The chances of someone like that actually paying attention to what I'm saying is tiny anyway, why waste my time?

Laugh, because I know for a fact there is no one better than me.

Lots of you are making this more complicated than it has to be.

Take a shiny coin out of your pocket. Then throw it.
Shuts them up every single time.

When I am almost always asked why I just threw a coin, I tell it to shut them up. And it worked.

*Note* Don't throw it AT them, just throw it at some pseudo-random location. Preferably one where the coin will make a loud noise.

It certainly isn't but I find 90% of the responses to this thread incredibly ignorant. Perhaps you could define more clearly who you mean?

Also have any of you wonderful people tried understanding the other person?

Condescending attitudes, with the intent to exclude you because they think their higher education makes them better than you. Willing to have sex with you, but not a conversation. Shutting you out, because they think you have nothing worthwhile to contribute outside the bedroom.
"serve me my coffee, now run along, so I can sit here and pontificate with my other intellectual friends"

Happy now? Understand?

Define "boring intellectuals." If you're going to just drown on about meeningless stuff, I see no point in bothering you, one of the topics that bother me the most are people who go on for hours and hours about how sports games are the best videogame ever created. Most of the time it isn't fat people who play them, so why don't you go out, AND ACTUALY PLAY THE GAME WITH YOUR FRIENDS! My next most bated topic are the people that have memorized every little detail about a sport, and the people who want to listen to it. No I don't want to sit down for 3 hours listening about how Robert Griffith the third is the best rushing back or whatever, ain't nobadahy got time for dat.

Sounds more like a personal issue and more than someone just being a 'boring' intellectual.

I've encountered the same arrogance among Business types who think are just as quick to send you for coffee because your chest is bigger than theirs or you fingernails are painted.

I seen engineers play the 'Friends don't let friends take arts' card. and give the 'I survived third year engineering, what's your excuse?' attitude.

I've encountered my share of hipsters too.

What I'm seeing in this thread though is a general hate on and mockery of those who HAVE 'book smarts' Yeah many of them can be social idiots (just like everyone else). but they can bring as much to the party as the jock's big muscles.

And sad to say. Perhaps you don't have anything to contribute. Just like my friend who hates anime has nothing to share with me on the subjects I like to discuss here on crunchy roll. If you lack a basic understanding of the subject, if you don't speak the language. .. Well blurting out whatever comes to mind is going to sound...

... imagine someone burst in to a conversation between the typical crowd here on CR. talking about how great the Batman anime was, and how 'that Pokemon stuff you all like' is okay.

Given the nature of the posts people are making to THIS thread I'd say violence would result. Can we collectively claim to be any better than these nameless persons you've lumped together as 'boring intellectuals'? Is this any different than me taking a dig a women? or 'Narutards?'

If I know I'm hanging out with sports people I sometimes look up a sports pundit and adopt his attitude about 'the big game' we are watching as if it was my own.

that and a fake injury always helps.

"What do you think of the power step?"

"AGGHGHGHGH! the power step is what did in my right knee! let's talk about something else"

I DO read a little bit of sports just so I have something other than weather on which to have an opinion. Rather than just look blankly at the sports fan I'm trying to socialize with. But honestly I care very little for sports.

I just ignore them or troll them. I also try to understand them and put myself in their shoes. When you understand their viewpoint, you will realize that the person is just wrong or right.

like you said, try understanding and including them first, then decide. My example wasn't really personal, it was just an example. I'm not sleeping with anyone, at the moment, intellectual or not.
Who is Batman and Pokemon? ( jk)

There ARE a lot of dicks in the academic/intellectual world. Many of the psychological bullies too. Interestingly enough those also tend to be physical cowards. There CAN be a certain element of Shadenfruede when you crack their shells.

Someone really on a high intellectual level (has somebody defined what "intellectual" means?) would never tell other persons they are dumb, because thats dumb.
