There ARE a lot of dicks in the academic/intellectual world. Many of the psychological bullies too. Interestingly enough those also tend to be physical cowards. There CAN be a certain element of Shadenfruede when you crack their shells.

Psychologically strong doesn't mean physically weak. No, I don't lift 24/7 so I can look like this,

but I just don't think that looks good, I take MMA so I can know how to defend myself, and I'm perfectly fine at 130 looking like this

And yes, I do enjoy the occasional mind fuck, but even complete dumbasses play that game.

I usually ask them for money as they're rambling on. Typically that shuts them up or at least prevents them from waving their hands while talking. As far as them being "better than you" ... you're allowing them to make you feel inferior. It's up to you, not them, to stop that.

Depends on a lot of variables. If we're in a debate and they take a condescending tone, I'll attempt to outwit them if I think it's possible. If they actually just flat out smarter than I am, and all my attempts at wit are foiled, I'll concede. But then poke fun at their condescending qualities so that I appear more humble than them, and thus more socially accepted and likable. That usually pisses them off because most people of that nature aren't liked and aren't very social. But they desire both those things. Trolling them usually only leads to them being able to make fun of you even more.

Being the exception doesn't disprove the rule. most of the psychological bullies I know aren't physically very much nor are they particularly brave about risking their precious necks.

Also I don't think 'psychological strong' and 'book smarts' are identical terms. In Fact, I'd argue that 'bully' and 'psychologically strong' are mutually exclusive.

If you were to come across me in a library reading a book on quantum physics, you would deem me an intellectual, most likely.
If you were to come across me in a library reading a trashy harlequin romance novel, you would deem me a dumbbell most likely, even though my IQ could be 200, and I just enjoy readying trashy novels.
I guess it's all about appearances and judgements, until you actually give that person an opportunity to open their mouths and speak, and see what they can contribute.

I'd just think you're enjoying some mental bubblegum at that moment. I wouldn't assume you weren't capable of consuming the intellectual equivalent of a blue ribbon four course dinner at some other time. That would be just ignorant.

I find the more stuck up people are about their book smarts the more hollow their accomplishments are.

The smartest person I know (gifted kid, Idea of bathroom reading is five inch thick history book preferable written by someone who was there etc) works with his hands for a living. He walked away from academia about two inches short of completing his master's thesis simply because he foresaw a future of throwing one of his intellectual colleagues to be down a flight of stairs.

He wears a tool belt all day, his fashion choice is canvas duck. and he can think circles around almost anyone else I know.

Most people I've caught trying to score intellectual points of me have been so transparent and out to lunch I just have to laugh at them.

On the other side of the coin.

I had a romantic partner who always wanted to be 'with it' in the conversation and would blurt out amazing bullshit just avoid being silent. We broke up because, honestly, a lover who makes you put your face in your palm everytime they open their mouth isn't nearly as fun in real life as it is in anime.

A perfect example of a douchebag and delusional intellectual is the poster of this thread: http://www.crunchyroll.com/forumtopic-785813/obamas-presidency#41929083 He just has no idea how wrong he is.

Your question is ambiguous. Do you consider all intellectuals boring and condescending or are you referring to a specific intellectual with a dominant personality?

Ignore them, or if I really can't handle it, tell them to shut the fuck up. I hate people who think they know everything.

no, just the ones who THINK and ACT like they are better than you , like the forum topic suggested....due to education, academics, or book smarts, etc.
I am not grouping all intellects..and not calling all of them boring.
