Tell them how they're wrong. After that, if they keep it up, I assume they're being wrong on purpose, so I leave it alone.

By handing them a Playboy magazine and watching them burn alive after they see stuff they've never seen before.

I don't know any boring intellectuals. I know plenty of irritating psuedo-intellectuals, I ask them politely to "please shutup."

What a loaded question.

Truly, consider the multifarious opinions on what classifies both "boring", "think they're better than you", and who one considers an "intellectual."

Additionally,

this a contemptible statement and you should feel thoroughly ashamed of yourself for saying it. I assume the grammatical mistake is intentional, though I wouldn't very much care if it wasn't.

More important, is the absurd notion that "book smarts" are not everything. This ostensible logic, common held among the working-class, ignores the reality of the situation: people, generally, value degrees -- pieces of paper saying your smart-- more than experience.

I'm sorry, but if you ingeniously and sincerely believe this, you may not be wrong, but you would be ill-advised to put this into practice.

If the individual is an intellectual and not a pseudo-intellectual, than I am assuming that they are smarter than I am. I would shut-up and listen. If an intellectual is willing to sit down and have a conversation with me there is an opportunity to learn and learning is never boring.

If the individual is an intellectual than s/he probably is better than me... at least in the field in which s/he is considered an intellectual. Why fore-go the chance of bettering myself by ignoring or disregarding what s/he has to say?

I normally just sit there with my face and let them talk, then just leave.

You, you are alright.

I value new and useful information, and so if there was someone who was more knowledgeable than me I would most certainly pull up a chair and pick their brain.

Intellectual people are decent enough to admit when someone is better than them usually. You're probably talking in terms of narcissists.

This thread is hypocritical. You get pissed off at intellectuals for "putting you down," but then you put them down. Just because someone is knowledgeable that doesn't mean they think they're better than everybody else. So there are some people like this, but a lot of people aren't. Hate threads like this disgust me. I mean, is it really necessary to sit here and bash on people you barely know?

I guess I'm just getting tired of all the negativity on the internet. Nobody can see anybody (for the most part), so since everything is anonymous people seem to think it's okay to be so hateful toward each other. And I do acknowledge that there's really nothing I can do about all the negativity and hate; it's never going to truly go away. I just don't see the point in talking crap about people on the internet or getting into pointless arguments that serve absolutely no purpose at the end of the day.

I often get the sense that people increasingly (especially in the United States) find knowledge and intellectual inquiry to be threatening. Ignorance is a virtue that is valued more so than knowledge and having an idea or "feeling" is somehow better than having facts or empirical evidence...It's a very disconcerting trend. Maybe i am being a pesimist and there are more people around like myself.

Anywho, glad i am not a special unique snow-flake and someone relates.
