They hate Shiina, so it's understandable. I can't stand her either, her BS made me want to drop the show entirely.

Really? The only character I found hard to deal with was Sorata since he acted like such an ass.

That's the problem when people view shows like this in terms of "best girl" and MC dating simulator. The overall message of the show has nothing to do with love, it is more so about life being cruel and throwing you curve balls. The show also notes on the fact that hard work and perseverance don't equate to success. Soratas spiteful reactions to Shiina make perfect sense in the confines of that overall message, he resents her, even though she does work hard as well her natural talent overshadows anything that average people can do.

As far as Shiina goes I can't stand her because she is clearly not stupid as she always acts, you can see that the train station scene and yet she never speaks for more than 5 seconds and constantly does annoying crap to Sorata like an overly attached pet(hence the name of the show).

This sums up her issues perfectly. She acted as though she was impaired by not being able to do the most basic of things. You can paint a beautiful portrait and draw extraordinary, but you cant even dress yourself? Good show, good message, questionable character.

Just look how much they hate the anime in Japan.

Sadly the reason they don't like it is because they don't like Koreans. They changed some rice gruel to a Korean food in an episode and ever since there has been a lot of hate against it. This didn't have as large an effect, likely, as people are making it out to be but it likely cost them at least 10-15% of sales.

I did see something about rice gruel in the bad reviews, but since I don't know Japanese it did not make much sense because the words in the translation were jumbled and incoherent.

Seems like an incredibly petty reason for so many people to just blindly hate something.

Sadly all you need to see is this:
韓国料理のサムゲタン

韓国 = Korea
料理 = Cooking
サムゲタン = http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samgyetang

http://www.amazon.co.jp/gp/product/B009MIDSQY

I am drinking some Chamisul Soju right now, why or why can't we all just get along?

Well, no, she's not stupid; she's autistic. And this sort of reaction is a large part of why people with social issues have problems with people in the real world (I should know...). She's not screwing with anyone on purpose; she doesn't even know how, but it's surprisingly easy to screw with people by mistake. Her communication problems make it hard for her to understand or maintain relationships, and cause people to treat her like an object (Sorata blaming her for being more talented, adults who manipulate her life because they don't know or care that she wants to use her talents for her own purposes) or make false assumptions about her (the girl from art school who thought Shiina hated her).

Or, y'know, the viewers. The rampant hate for her is sort of depressing, honestly.

And before you ask, yes, some autistic people really do have trouble getting dressed. This has no bearing on drawing/painting ability, which is a very different type of body movement.

There is no source in the novel that actually says shes autistic. The fact that everything single thing she does is textbook autistic is nice and all but that doesn't technically make it true if it's never brought up in the source. Beyond that not that many people actually hate her, 90% of people on CR love her I'm sure, but the fact that I and a few others hate the character does not make it rampant hatred and is not some sort of hatred for people with autism.

The problem is her character in the anime doesn't scream autism it screams fanservice pandering.

I'm sure it's a just a vocal minority (I hope so, at least) and that not everyone who is Japanese let's their opinion be warped by something as petty as a food from a different culture.

It doesn't take a genius to comment on how people shouldn't be racist towards others, but it still happens, and it's a shame that it actually affects sales. Especially when, as you said, Koreans help to make some of our favorite anime, all the time.

On the topic of a second season, personally, I'd love to see another one. Even though the show may have flaws I still enjoyed it a lot and I'd like to see the rest of the story animated.

Shiina goes way behind just being a klutz. Whether that means she's mentally ill, or just such a genius that she's out of touch with normal reality, or both, she's still a fascinatingly unique character. It's fine not to like her, but I think it's wrong to depreciate how singular she is. I really can't think of another character who's quite like her from anything.

Kanade Tachibana.

And that's fair I guess. It's hard for me to comment since I haven't finished Angel Beats.

But from what I remember, all those characters have good reason to be screwed up in the head. Shiina apparently just is that way normally, not because of abuse or post-death afterlife traumatic experiences.

But, for that matter, if we're going to group Kanade Tachibana and Shiina does that reinforce Shiina being a fanservice character, or not? I don't remember enough of Kanade Tachibana to know what direction we're going.

Edit:

Ayanami Rei doesn't count either, since she's basically the personification of perpetual psychological trauma.

But that said, there's probably a bunch of other Rei clones I'm just not thinking of.

I can, Honey & Clover.

It's not that I don't understand the importance of her from a story perspective or how she actually is a focal point and catalyst for many characters development. My issue is with how she was depicted, go back one page and you'll know what I mean.

So essentially she is a character with a lack of a personality causing problems for characters you can actually relate to. At first I didn't mind her but once she became the crux of everything it bothered me that everyone would bend over backwards for her while she doesn't really show any real development until the train station.
